Old boy here. Been around on and off since the glory days of D&D. That now seems like ages ago, and too think too hard about it makes me feel far too long in the tooth. My last game of Warhammer Fantasy was not long after the version 3 came out in that hard bound book.

Occasionally put my head above the trenches when I could to see what's been going on with the hobby over the years but never seriously stayed with it due to far too many adult obligations and expectations.

Only really started to come back more seriously over the last couple of months, I expect more nostalgia then anything for the good ole days. Any way the urge to do something again is very strong this time round and I no longer have the shackles that was stopping me from exploring and enjoying myself.

All I can really say is have things really changed. I'M talking to you Citadel/Games workshop. What happened?

At then moment I am looking for inspiration to keep the newly rekindled flame alight and a good push in the right direction so I can get a few things done (I have a natural inbuilt lazy streak). I have not done much painting since the mid to late 1980's so I am more then rusty and need quite a bit of practice to get back with it.

I have also realised that there is more then one games company out there and there are just so many fantastic looking models to choose from. But then again sometimes the old lead models of yesteryear can tug at the heart strings.

Welcome aboard. GW certainly has upped its game recently.

There are some great examples of modelling hints and tutorials in the forums - perfect for inspiration and blowing cobwebs off painting skills.

Are you looking to play or just paint? Nothing wrong with those old metal models...they are easier to strip if you want to repaint them anyway! I'd say narrow down your interests a bit first and go from there.

Good luck!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hello and Thank you.

I am not too sure where I want to be at the moment. It's early days again for me. Everything seems so exciting.

At the moment I just want to model and paint but with the eventual aim of finding people locally to start playing again. Not too sure if I want to go Sci-Fi or Fantasy, full battle or skirmish game.

I have brought up a few mixed collections of odds and bods including many new pieces and vintage so what I hold is a real mix from all periods. Everything from D&D,Warhammer, Age of Sigmar,40k,Lord of the rings to Malifaux. Some of the plastic pieces that grabbed my attention were from Malifaux. The steampunk Gothic Horror look to the miniatures is superb and the Gremlins bring a grin to my face.

Paints were almost thrown at me along with many copy's of old White Dwarf mag's. Guess I was in the right place at the right time.

Most of the people I see locally in the model/toy shop all appear to be much younger then myself. Makes me feel a little(quite a lot out of place) when I am there. Often it's difficult to talk to them as being much younger they often do not want to talk to grandpa. But what I have gathered is everybody seems interested in playing something but in reality nobody seems to play anything. There has to be a local group of enthusiastic players somewhere in my home town?

The search continues.

The only constant that does not change is the amount of lead and plastic that builds up on the painting table. Happy days as one young fella said to me yesterday. I guess that's one thing that never changes and stays the same no matter how old you are in this game.
