Anyone done grot kommandos that you'd be willing to share pics of? In my grot army, the orks are all prisoners or slaves, so I can't see using them for the kommandos. I've got a couple ideas though... one is 'roid-grots. Grot legs, grot head, but boyz body/arms/weaponry -- sort of a unit of goblinoid Rambos. The other was grots-in-space-marine-power-armor (aren't you a little short to be a storm-trooper?). The power-armor should make them strong enough to be worthy of the kommando statline, and that's how they were sneaking around behind enemy lines . Surely one or both of these has been done, but my google-fu failed me in finding any pictures.

thanks,
Coh

Depending on how comical you want to be, I'd suggest taking inspiration from the Ork Kommandos that were created by attaching arms or legs to small pieces of terrain, like crates, barrels, and ammo boxes. The classic "Not an ork" sign is always well received too.

I've been doing a bunch of grot conversions using looted IG and SM bits. These are two finished versions. I've also got some unpainted grots with lasguns/pistols, IG helmets, packs, pouches, etc. They're fun to do.

Oh wow, those guys are awesome! Any details on how you made the little power-armor grot? SM bits and copious greenstuff?

Old RTB Marines would be aces for this. Small enough to fit the Grot heads and the "poopy pants" posture fits the orky aesthetic. Mix and match the paint schemes on the body parts for a looted look.
Damn, now I really want to do a squad of these.

The RTB marines seem to be going for a premium over at flea-bay. My son has some horus heresy marines that he hasn't built yet, though -- are those even close to the RTB ones?

Hi Coh Magnussen, since you mentioned "grots-in-space-marine-power-armor" thought i'd share a little experimental conversion I did a while go. I wanted it to look like more than just sticking a grot head on some power armour

Good luck with whatever you do decide to do for these Grot Kommandos

I based it off a pic I saw of "pauldron armor" squats/grots. It's basically all leftover Space Marine bits.

The body is three SM pauldrons glued together (like 3/4 of a pill), with the grot head mounted on a blob of greenstuff. The legs are SM legs (from a Land Speeder model I previously looted) chopped off through the lower knee pads. Some more Greenstuff to fill the gaps on the legs, pouches to hide the body/leg junction. Then just normal pauldrons, pack, and weapon arms cut off at the elbow.

Not really. The thing that would make them good armored Grots is the proportions are pretty far off from modern Marine sculpts. Smaller, shorter, a bit gangly and thin. Much less "Heroic scaled".

So I'm ridiculously slow, but I did finally get a start on one of these kommandos. I started with the 'roid-grot style since that's easiest -- this first one will be kitted for burninating so he can also double as a burna in kill-team. I'm thinking prime/paint the arms and backpack separate, just holding the pieces together gets awfully tight in there. What do y'all do with burna type models wrt paint-then-assemble vs assemble-then-paint?

Pardon the awful pics. fire-7 camera sucks, took the pics through my magnifier though to try to get a sort of macro effect.

I'm planning to paint the bare bit on his lower back as flesh, but the burna-backpack should cover most of that so it won't be very visible anyways.

Well that image is going to give me nightmares. Thanks. :p

Interesting project. Please share more pictures when you have time.

Thanks Cleatus, Cam! I only had 4 ork torsos, so for now there will be a burna, a big shoota, and 2 normal kommandoes. I need to check the index to see if Kommandoz get boss nobs, because I do have a nob torso I could use to round out the unit.

The initial 4 have primer on their "torso" assembly (legs/torso/head), and I've primed the burna's limbs/accessories. I'll get pictures of the group once I get the initial wash on so that you can actually see it. Right now I'm leaning towards paint-then-assemble, I'm going to try that on the burna at least and see how it goes. I may regret that choice if I end up needing green-stuff to fill gaps, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

As always, forgive the awful photography (it's nearly as bad as my painting) and in this case ignore the cat hair. I'm really looking forward to finishing this crew out.

The fantasy heads seem bigger (second from the right), thinking of giving him a rambo-bandana and calling him the 'nob'. Could also just be a side-effect of the steroid spores!

Looking at those, I immediately get a back story going through my head of some Mad Dok that managed to make some crazy growth hormone. You could probably even sub in the Dok as a Boss Nob and port them all over for Kill Team.

Shrapnel -- apparently It also turns a surprising number of unsuspecting grots into pyromaniacs . My plan has definitely been to use these guys in Kill-Team! In 40k they're all kommandos, but in Kill-Team they'll be kitted out to match kommandos, burnas, and even spanners. I like the idea of the Dok leading them into battle, he might have to be just a normal sized grot (he didn't experiment on himself, of course!) and he can be the leader .

Or.... what if he jekyl and hydes... normal grot sized dr jekyl for KT commander, and morphs into a mr. hyde-style leader of the kommandoes and counts-as Snikrot for the 40k field? A third model of him in jekyl-mode with a mechanical dok-tools contraption to be a painboy in 40k as well, and all bases are covered! Now he just needs a name...

P.S. got a little painting done last night, some basecoating on the burna torso-assembly plus the skin and gloves on both arms, but the kindle camera is so awful, I'll wait to borrow an iphone from one of the girls before sharing PIP pics.

What about using a regular Painboy as the Mad Dok, and a regular sized grot as Igor?

Hmm, especially if you use one of the grots from a mek gun with the tools and wires as Igor?

Some WIP shots of the first burna...

I painted the pack, but doesn't fit very well so I cut off the chains and am going to file/GS a better fit, and maybe reattach the chains. After I've re-painted the glue joins it'll be time to highlight and pick out some details like the eyes (planning on red in there eventually). I forgot to highlight the dirt before I glued on the burna-bits, but I should be able to work around that without too much trouble (I hope!).

This guy is just whetting my appetite -- a bunch of new Ork torsos arrived (along with some SM jump-packs for non-bloon stormgrotz), so I'm planning to build a bunch and try some batch-painting.

For you guys that paint-then-assemble, are small areas of unprimed plastic a problem? I filed off the paint where I was gluing, but now there's some exposed plastic at the shoulders around the arms taht I'll be touching up. Should I brush on some primer first? I've got vallejo primer in black, grey, and white that I could apply as a first coat, just trying to avoid too much "do-over" of the stuff I already painted.

I like the igor idea for a grot orderly, but my 40k army is grot-based and the only actual Orks are prisoners so the mad Dok is also going to need to be a grot. I'm really liking the idea of Dr GrotSnik and Mr. SnikGrot, though, perhaps he experimented on himself after all .

In fact I stopped at the FLGS today to pick up a fresh box of gretchin so I'd have more options for the mad dok's conversion (I have a couple partially used boxes of gretchin, but some of the same bits got used out of both boxes already, since that one guy with 2 separate arms is so much easier to change up than the single-piece grots) Sadly they were out, so I'll have to focus on his Mr. Snikgrot incarnation for now .

oh wow, something went wonky with those pics... they weren't great to begin with, but they weren't THAT bad. I'll try again later with one of the girls' Iphones.

It's shocking how many grots keep their noses on with the amount they get roughed up.

Lol, funny you should mention that. On my killteam roster his name is "Krumpnose".

Here they are, as done as this batch is likely to get. They need 2 cohorts to make a squad of 5, I'm debating how to do the burnas still though. I really *really* want to do a set of 5 of these for each other faction that makes sense.. 'nid kommandos, tau kommandos, etc. I suspect though that I'll get distracted by some other shiny (like grot monocycles!). I'm trying to make sure I do enough of something to have a fieldable unit (he says as he leaves the 1 lone storm-grot with no companions). Anyhow, pics after painting :
