So my wife starts her new job in south Georgia next week. While she will be working in south Georgia, her first day will be the company orientation at their HQ in Atlanta. That's a 3 1/2 hour drive from where we live. So we'll be driving up on Sunday, staying the night, then I'll drop her off for her orientation. Then I have a whole day to kill in Atlanta before I pick her up in the afternoon and we drive home.

So I needed to figure out a way to kill an entire day in Atlanta. I asked myself "What is Atlanta known for that's fun and a good way to spend a whole day?" Naturally the first thing I thought of was "Nudie Bars!!!"

Now when you roll into a nudie bar at 11:30 in the morning on a Monday, the "talent" at a nudie bar isn't at its best. I was fully preparing myself for c-section scars, much saggyness, and maybe even a bullet wound or two.

And then I thought "Wait, doesn't Atlanta have a GW store?"

So this Monday I'll be going to the Atlanta GW store. I'm even making a shopping list for oddball items that you don't normally see in regular FLAGS, like extra oversized round bases and Space Marines Jump Packs. I also intend to pump he staff for rumors.

I've never been to a GW store before. Anyone here been to the Atlanta GW store? Anything I should try to see/do while I'm there?

I've heard that the Atlanta aquarium is excellent. I think they have the worlds largest indoor single aquarium too, so big that they've got a whale shark in it. That would be high on my list.

Yeah, but that's expensive. I can go to the GW store, hang out, bother the Red Shirts by asking stupid questions all day, and then leave without buying anything; and that will cost me nothing. Then I can take the money I don't spend and bring it with me to the nudie bar.

Although I WILL be buying some Plasma Guns if they have any, and round bases (please see my Base Size thread).

Tip: it's a retail store, with employees who get their rumors from the same blogs you do because they're minimum-wage cash register operators and the exact same inventory you can buy online at any time. Go somewhere actually unique or fun, not the hobby equivalent of the local Walmart.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Atlanta is really nice. Spent a week there visiting during Hurricane Irma. Lots of good food and things to do. Even stopped into the GW there - the manager seemed friendly, although I didn't get a chance to play.

Just remember things like the aquarium might cost, but you won't run the risk of getting into any trouble visiting them. Well I mean unless you tap on the glass a lot.....
Also don't forget that bars often come with drink at high prices even if you're not going for the alcohol so it still costs

Also Peregrine is right, GW store staff are basically not much more than fans who get paid to sell and work the store. In fact many might not even be active online and thus might not even know all the latest rumours. Even the UK GW staff get very little warning on events coming up, and not much more than when the public already knows (eg when stock starts shipping and thus rumours are already rife). So you won't have missed out on much there; though yeah shame that you cant visit as it might have been fun to see and chat with some new hobby fans and get a chance are buying some hobby stuff

I'll second Gigabytes. I spent the back-half of last year traveling to Atlanta for work and always stopped in after I landed on Mondays. I was always able to find a pick-up game just by pinging the FB group and letting folks know when I'd be in. Tuesday nights always have a large crowd playing as well.

GW stores are all the same template. You know exactly what you're getting.

Atlanta resident here. I'd also recommend Gigabytes. It's not too far outside the city, and it has a good community of regular players if you're looking to get in some 40k.

he's not 100% right, GW employees aren't just uneducated fans who know no more then us, they DO occasionally get brought down to HQ for workshops etc. but they don't get a lot of info of relevance to us, and what they are told they're pretty tight lipped about. You generally don't go to the local GW for rumors. it's worth poking your head in one. but don't think they're some sort of magic Warhammer mecca.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

First off, they have a shop in Atlanta!? Second, are the prices the same as in their website? I currently don't have Amazon prime, and would be a good deal interested if I don't have to pay shipping.
