I’d like to make a new chapter. Only thing is, I like the Black Templar codex/rules/strategies, but I have a different thing in mind in terms of visuals. Could I make a such a chapter that doesn’t use the Black Templar models at all?

There are no rules in the game for how to paint your models. It is totally fine to use the Black Templars rules and have that represent your own chapter.

Note that there are rules in the codex for creating your own chapter too, but they're a bit rubbish because you lose access to some things. You're better off just counting as an existing chapter as you say you want to do

Cool. How do I go about making initiates and neophytes in a crusader squad? Do I just use tactical marine and scout models, as the lore suggests?

Also, how many CPs do you get on a basic game? I would like to create a character with the teeth of terra and jazz up a chainsword. My issue is if I can't use a teeth of terra every game, wouldn't I be stuck with just a chainsword?

Yes, just use regular marines and scouts is fine.

You get 3cp plus CP earned from detachments (and occasionally special characters). To get the full details you'll need the rule book.

There is no rule this edition about models holding the weapons they are supposed to have. So technically you could have a Chainsword on the model but it would actually be a powerfist, so long as you make it clear to your opponent. Personally I don't like doing that, but that's me. Also some tournaments have rules about it, but if you're just playing casual you'll be fine.

Battle-forged armies always get one free relic without paying any CP no?

Correct. It must be from the same faction as the Warlord.

UK

Absolutely go for it.

Any name with Knights or Templar in it. Anything with Sigismund, or Honour etc.

As for paint scheme any colour is good but you should have something that harks back to the Black Templars. LIke shoulder or knee pad with Templar icon

I wasn't really going for the templar look at all, I just like how they work. I was thinking about an Aztec-themed sort of army (yes I know the lizardmen are like that but I want futuristic dakka too!) was going to make a giant Macuahuitl chainsword thing and call it the Teeth of Terror, then give my Captain an eagle's head helm and call it the Crusader's helm. Give all my Marines some green stuff feathers, skulls and other ornamental stuff. Would use Aztec numbers on shoulder pads and so on.

Sounds cool, go for it!

Would I be able to take Chaplain Grimaldus, given he's a named character for Black Templars? The extra attack on 6s is juicy.

If you are using the full Black Templar rules (not the successor chapter rules) then absolutely you can take him!

It's perfectly legal to take the BLACK TEMPLARS keyword and paint them however you want.

Even if its my own 'successor' chapter, so to speak? As long as I follow the Templar's codex I can use any of their characters?

Just make sure your opponent knows which rules you're using.

Cool
Can someone outline for me in what order should I start buying stuff to eventually work up to 1000pts? Gonna need a HQ and a couple of troops right? Should I get a captain first or Chaplain Grim?

The Marine half of the Dark Imperium box is a solid staring point. That alone is 900ish points. Just get one more box of troops of your choice (you want three troop units, DI only has two) and you're good to go.

They don't have scouts for neophytes though, or does that not matter right now?

Edit: Also they're Primaris.

Correct. It's by far the most economical way to get into Marines right now, plus depending on how you split the box you might end up with the Rule Book which is worth £35 new.

If you aren't that into Primaris it's a tough one though!

Well that depends on whether you want neophytes! If you specifically want to build a Crusader squad, then you need tacticals and scouts. Though that Crusader squad could be the third troop I mentioned that you need.

Edit: Also they're Primaris.

Yes. And at this point if you're starting a new marine army from scratch, I strongly recommend that you build mostly around Primaris. They're the future of Space Marines. Whilst I don't think the old style marines will become literally unplayable any time soon, they're basically a legacy option now and GW will concentrate on the Primaris in the future.

EDIT: Except if you really do not like the Primaris models. Ultimately get the models you like, regardless of what people on the internet may say.

I don't mind the Primaris fluff and what not, my issue is how they're no-where near as customisable as the default Marines; they're more specialised. I don't like the Riever knives eithers. What happened to a good ol' chainsword? :(

I'll probably use default Marines. If they're totally replaced in the future, we'll that's more plastic to paint

I converted my Reivers to have chainswords. They have the same rules anyway.

Betrayal at Calth box is a great way to get a lot of non-primaris marines, if you don't mind the heresy era armour marks.

There was an absolutely stunning Incan styled Marine force someone was showing off here a couple years ago. I think I saved the pictures I was so impressed. Really friggin' gorgeous stuff. I think it'd be a great theme to do for your army.

Do you reckon you could find these pics for me? While Inca is somewhat different, it'd be nice to see their approach.

That's not a bad idea actually. Which bits would you use?

I'm not sure. I'd probably just look around on Ebay. The feathers can be done with green stuff; I could make a mould so I could make lots at once. Space Marines seem fond of eagle attire; there's a backpack with some eagle heads on it. For an eagle helm I might have to drill out a used metal eagle from Age of Sigmar, or find a plastic eagle toy and cut the head off. Plenty of skulls around I could also try and 'strip' some orc heads; drill out eye sockets etc. try to make orc skulls. Lots of ideas on my mind.

You could also look for some old Deathwing Terminators. Originally they were based in Native American culture and some of them had feathers on their weapons.
