Hi Dakka, I'm interested in getting into 30k; I love the whole HH series and my friend and I are both going to begin collecting armies. I think he will be playing either Thousand Sons or Space Wolves but I'm unsure of which Legion to pick.

My main contenders at the moment are Sons of Horus, World Eaters, Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors.
I LOVE Primarchs and ideally, I would like to fit one into my army.

In terms of the way I'm leaning atm, World Eaters would probably be my main pick. I would be looking to run a fast, hard-hitting list that closes ground quickly and tries to overwhelm the opponent in CC. However, I'm really not a fan of Angrons rules (I love his character, model and fluff). He seems so subpar, a big beatstick with poor survivability that really contributes to nothing but the kill-count. He gets severely out-duelled by Russ and would get blown apart in moments by Magnus, I also think he would match up horribly vs all the psy-shenanigans of the TS's. I'm wondering if it might just be more effective to replace Angron with a big, aggressive tank like a typhon or a fellblade that still suits the theme of the army but doesn't massively hinder its potential. Are there any suitable Lords of War that would synergise well with an aggressive rush WE list and do decent vs Wolves/TS's?

Son's of Horus are interesting, I really like their armour aesthetics; also Horus is my favourite primarch and actually seems viable to use with his army-wide buffs, powerful stats and general utility, but a lot of the legions units seem overcosted and hard to use. Being new to this setting I think I would struggle with them. I would probably run a drop pod list focussing around Horus with a core of Justaerin.

Alpha legion also have a great aesthetic and Alpharius has such awesome rules and fluff, but they just don't completely fo it for me, they don't have the same appeal to me as the world eaters do, maybe its the colour scheme or the lack of a solid identity, I'm not sure, and I'm really not sure what sort of a list I would use with them. But maybe having a viable primarch can swing me.

Iron Warriors I'm mainly attracted to because I like their armour and their robots, the iron circle look really sweet and their Tyrant terminators are also very cool. I like the heavy gun-line aspect of them and I would probably run a phosphex/"banned weapons" centred list supported by robots, but they do seem like a legion that would become boring quickly. Also, I have very little interest in Perturabo.

What I'm looking for is some advice as to how these legions operate, how easy it is to play them, maybe some viable strategies for them and which would match up best vs TS and Wolves. I don't plan on playing super-competitively but I'd like to be able to hold my own

I also like Dreadnoughts, which of these legions best suits them?

You either want World Eaters or Sons of Horus if you want a real melee ripper army from those legions. If World Eaters are just lacking that certain something in the Primarch dept (and I agree, Angron is looking subpar these days statline wise), then Horus Lupercal is your man. Stick him in a spartan with a big squad of reavers, have Abaddon deep strike in with a mob of Justaerin terminators, etc etc.

Every legion should take a talon of Dreadnoughts.
And if your friend is taking Thousands Sons, screw him over with Sister of Silence squads.

I would suggest veering away from comparing most of the Primarchs to Russ or Magnus. Granted the former recently took a hit to his dueling capability, both clock in at the upper echelon of duelist Primarchs. The thing to remember is - most Primarch vs Primarch fights are going to be wildly uneven. Because any head-on even engagement will take most of if not more than the allotted game turn count.

Re; Alpha Legion (because that seems like one you're not too certain on), their big draw is that they can more or less build a list to mimic any other Legion. They can even outright take another Legion's specific units as their own (meaning fun shenanigans like infiltrating Red Butchers is possible). Alpharius himself is one of the most powerful army buffing Primarchs, outright giving his whole army Preferred Enemy: Everything.

They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.

Yeah, that is a good point, but I mean for magnus that he can blast away angron in statistically one turn if hes in the open, and the main reason I'm comparing to them to those two is because those are the two I expect to see. Also the salient issue with Angron is that he just doesn't fit in really. He's so expensive and tricky to protect, yeah he will reave through squads in one turn but other than that hes really not good for much at all. Dedicated fire will destroy him so quickly and almost everything ignores his armour save, also I'm pretty sure Russ kills him in like 2-3 rounds of combat 1v1 when he uses his sword. I'm starting to think a big, similarly priced tank or investment in anti-vehicle weapons to crack open armour is probably the better option, its just a shame to miss out on the chance to run a primarch...

I do find Alpha Legion interesting, they have cool rules and yeah as you say Alpharius is probably the best force multiplier in 30k, I just find them a little bit boring as a Legion in fluff, and their choice of unique units isn't too appealing (even with the stealing units thing).

I think for me its a toss up between SoH and WE. I prefer WE overall but the SoH have my favourite primarch; they just don't necessarily play in the way I want. I suppose a deepstrike-heavy SoH list making liberal use of justaerin and leviathan dreads/Rams could be interesting...

I play Space wolves, and yes Russ is great, especially when hes supported by a Seerer of Runes. But keep in mind the new FAQ gave him a reasonable nerfed, but Magnus is still OP.

I recommend thinking about what army you invention fighting the battle, and what Army you see yourself Naming charaters and making the leaders unique.

I'd say go with SoH, that why you can always do "Fluff" accurate battles if he goes SW. Of he goes TS just pretend Magnus stayed loyal. Horus has great stats and is one of the few that can take Russ or buffed Magnus.

What were the nerfs to Russ if you don't mind me asking? I missed that FAQ.
SoH are certainly interesting, I just heard they're hard to play and I'm not such a fan of the colour scheme.

Interestingly, Horus actually defeats Russ 1v1 despite 4chan's Mathhammer calculations. They count his first round as 0.88% chance to wound (0 wounds) which doesn't take into account his disabling strike rule which will probably go off, as soon as DS goes off the fight changes dramatically, after the 2nd stack Horus starts beating Leman like a drum. I did 6 real test duels between the two of them and Horus won 5 and lost one. Russ needs to open hard to win and pray he doesn't get wounded first round. But as Obsidian suggested their duel generally outlasts the game-turn counter which is immensely inefficient
