So you can bring a battalion of death guard with 3 units of plaguebearers as the troops because the share the faction keyword 'nurgle,' which all the HQ choices all share. It won't be a death guard battalion so you can't have access to the stratagems but there's nothing to stop you, say, making a deathguard chaos prince your warlord and giving him the free relic the suppurating plate? Just want to confirm this before a send off a list for a tournament

Correct. You can take it as a legal Detachment, even with the beta faction rules that don't permit using CHAOS as the detachment keyword. Note that that rule is beta, and therefore might not be in use in some tournaments anyway. As you say, you won't benefit from certain Death Guard faction abilities though.

You are also correct about the relic.

With all of this though, it's worth checking the specific guidelines for the tournament you are entering, as they may differ from the official rules.

You won't get "inexorable advance" or "plague host" either. The former isn't an issue with a Deamon Prince or the Plaguebearers, but the latter could really help the former in an objective based game.
