Just curious. With all the coloured sprues coming out from new Game Worksop kits, would this mean the "grey tide" is finally going away and it will become the "rainbow tide" now? Could that mean Ultra marines will be blue sprues, Dark Angels would be green sprues, Blood Angels red sprues. I guess we will find out if the Space Wolves will be grey or light blue sprues.

What do you think? Is this a new way for GW to introduce colour into their games for people who don't paint now? Could this be a new way for 40K to be played in colour for people who want to play but don't like to paint? Is there really that many people in 40K who don't want to paint?

Just curious if anyone knows. I thought it would cost more money to have coloured sprues. Maybe this is the way to beat the "grey tide" in 40K games now?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

I do think there are in fact a lot of people who don't want to paint and I am one of them. Assembling I don't mind, but painting requires a lot more effort, time and skill that I just don't have or want to put the effort into attempting to obtain. The painting aspect (alongside the price) has been the #1 obstacle for people to try and get through when it comes to getting into the hobby. I think the colored plastic right now is an attempt to ease people into painting and make starting up user friendly.

Personally I am a bit surprised there is not some sort of official painting service offered by GW. The market is there, but I am sure that far smarter people have ran the numbers and found that to offer such would negatively effect overall income. Either you have mass produced crap people won't pay for are high quality stuff that is going to be hard to keep up with and make the hobby even more expensive thus prohibitive for new people.

Hey yeah so these 10 dudes are $60 and if you want them to look like they do on the box you need to pay another $60. Good luck with that sales pitch.

I thought it was just the dual faction boxed games that had coloured sprues to allow games to be played straight away?

TBH, I won't complain if they eventually introduce the coloured plastic to all kits eventually. Playing against entirely red Blood Angels or 100% blue Ultramarines beats facing grey hordes... except for the case of Grey Knights of course

Shadowspire and a few other boxed games also have coloured plastic.

I don’t mind the colored plastic at all, and if they could get to the level of Bandai kits (with different colored pieces on the same sprue) that’d be doubly cool.

I could happily live with a base blue ultramarine captain whose cloak is already white and his gun silver, for example.

And a premium service, ala Dust, where you can buy them assembled and preprimed or even fully painted could be done, they just probably wouldn’t because it’d eat into that precious profit.

It never ends well

I can't see that working given that separate parts on the sprue don't necessarily represent separate parts IRL (hands/arms and weapons are often single parts for example).

I could see it working but they'd need to design the minis with that in mind.

It'll probably never be done for full armies, but I really like it being implemented with the starter boxes, especially the terrain. Let's you crack them open and start playing pronto. Surprised it took them this long, lots of games have been doing this for a while.

I agree i like it for terrain since that's low on my list of things I'm gonna get time to paint. As for models though, meh. Regardless of what color plastic they make a mini, your gonna want to base it some kind of color before you actually start painting it.

Considering I've got models from thirty years ago that haven't even been primed yet, it can be a chore. Anything that can help me get the models to the table faster so I'm spending less time painting and more time playing (or admiring them, in my case) is a godsend.

There are times I look at my kid's toys - action figures that come pre-painted, assembled and ready to play and I wonder why I spend my time paying 5-10 times as much for figures that I've got to cut off sprues, glue together and paint - all before I can play a single game.

To me that's an easy answer. It's a hobby. These days if I wanted something pre rendered, I'll fire up a video game. There is something that can't be replaced, no matter how slow it is, to see a model you built, painted and played.

That's been what I've been able to suss out. If you get more than faction in a box they're color coded to make games faster to start playing (and likely to make it easier for new players to not mix the sprues up). Regular kits look like they're staying grey though (save for Easy to Build of course).

I think it'd be great if they did that. It doesn't affect priming at all. If you get a good primer on the model, it doesn't matter what color the plastic was. It also makes it really easy to spot different unpainted models in the middle of a melee. Playing Stormcast vs. Orks? Just look for the green models versus the gold.

And it still rewards people for having well painted models, because those models stand out the most.

My friend plays Death Guard, I started an Ultra Marines army 9 months ago. I've got to say, we like the pre-colored stuff.

When it came to the Ultras, most of my stuff was blue, so spraying the blue base coat was super easy and used much less paint than the grey plastic.

Also, if you want to play right away, having a handful of guys unpainted is much less distracting when they are "blue, but not finished" than a couple of grey dudes that don't match.

The same thing was true of my friend's Deathguard.

I wish they'd make Custodes pre-colored in gold.

I dunno custodes are such a small scale army I figure if you get custodes you proably should paint em up nicely. I mean when your army consists of 20-30 models....

Or people in more humid areas. I tried spray paint once for my Death Guards minis and uh, it did not go well.

It doesn't matter what colour the plastic is, you're supposed to pain them before putting them on the table, you bloody heretics!

Chaotic Red (at the bottom) looks close, and they usually try to match their colours to big names, like GW (hence the similar names).
It's normally cheaper, too.

I set myself the task of painting my Zombicide models, but ended up spraying the lot Army Painter green (it's the Ork version of the game) and spraying the bases different colours to tell the types apart. It took 4 batches and a bit of time to do the bases, but I didn't even bother taking the mold lines of this lot. I might wash them sometime, but they do look better sprayed.

If coloured plastic costs no more for GW to use, I'll be all for seeing colours for each army. If someone wanted to get a model on the table straight away, anything is better than grey.

I quite like the old grey minis - more nostalgia than anything else.

The old RTB01 for some reason was a putrid yellow, urgh.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

A lot of GW's plastics used to be beige - the Imperial vehicle kits, skeleton warriors, etc. I've also got the odd RTB01 Marine (or part of one) in blue and green plastic.

I remember 1st edition Space Hulk. All the Terminators and Genestealers were blue plastic, and all had black bases except the sergeants who had red bases.

Big thanks for the heads up, might have to look at that! It's not hard slapping Khorne Red on my Word Bearers with a tankbrush, but anything to speed the process up is appreciated!
