I am new to 40k, I got the Know No Fear set but didn't want to do the Ultramarines, how would I go about getting different logos for the shoulders. I was also wondering how you would go about making the logos for a homebrew chapter.

I'm new as well, but I know a bit about stuff like that for other projects that I've wanted done. The first option is pretty simple. Stencils. You can just draw up a design and print it out. After that you can have it professionally cut out or you can do it yourself. For multiple colors you'll want to use the same outline but with different stencil patterns. Otherwise you can do like Lego does and, presumably, (as I don't have a kit yet) Games Workshop does, and create stickers to put on them. A quick Google search shows that you can get sticker paper pretty much anywhere. From there, print out the design, and stick 'em on. Again, as I'm new, this may not work for smaller things, such as goblins, or humans, not much flat area that I can see, so if someone is more experienced and says something different, I'd differ to them.

Check out Shapeways.com. They have tons of shoulder pad designs with raised emblems on them. Or you can just get the symbol as a bit and glue it to the shoulder since “know no fear” are all push together/easy assembly.

1) You can search eBay for a variety of Warhammer 40K decal sheets. There are some aftermarket ones, and a load of ones people aren't using. You can combine some to make a custom logo if you want.

2) There are printers and decal sheets where you can actually design and print your own decals, but I have zero experience with this so I can't elaborate.

3) You can purchase 3D printed or resin shoulder pads, as mentioned above. A lot of companies offer 3rd party or aftermarket shoulder pads. Shoulder pads are the more expensive way to go, but often look pretty good.

4) You can paint your own logo...but this is hardest. If you do decide to make your own chapter (the best idea), and you decide to do a logo...keep it as simple as possible. Something you can paint frequently and relatively easily. My Eldar have a simple rune I designed, and my Renegades wear a simple black diamond on their shoulder pads (bordered with pale blue). I don't paint particularly well, but I can manage the occasional diamond logo on my tanks/infantry.

5) If you're new to 40K and just starting and aren't super well versed in modeling/decals/etc...skip the logos. You can always do them later. Concentrate on getting models painted first and then tackle icons/logos/advanced painting.
