I pledged to the Toughest Girls in the Galaxy 2 Kickstarter a few years ago, but I never actually used that money. So I still have about £200 ($266) of credit in the Pledge Manager. I more or less just lost interest, but didn't ever do anything about that (mostly because of depression, I guess). I finally managed to contact them about it a little while ago, and this is the response I got:

As you are well aware, Kickstarter is not a shop, and as such, I hate to tell you that I am not authorized to do refunds for it. You pledged to get this project off the ground, and we pledged to deliver great minis, which is what we are doing right now. Without your assistance and those of the other backers, this project would have never existed.

However, if you need to recover some money, you could trade your pledge with someone who would like to take it over. Late pledge still is open so you can still trade your investment or use the amount you pledge.

I wish i could help you more on this. Don't hesitate to stay in touch.

Being declined would have been different, but "I am not authorized" is kind of awkward because from what I can find on the subject, it is not true. I thought I'd come here for some advice before I go any further.

Well, he is right in that Kickstarter is not a shop. When you pledge money through Kickstarter, you are not buying anything, you are funding a business venture. The company or person you funded has no obligations whatsoever to give you back your money.
They can give refunds, of course, but that is entirely up to the company, and most companies don't do it after the 14 day grace period because that will turn them a financial loss (since Kickstarter takes 8% of the transaction which the company does not get back if the transaction is reversed.)

The turn of phrase is indeed awkward, but that may be because the person who wrote it is not a native English speaker (the people behind TGG2 are French afaik). Or maybe he has a boss who doesn't let him do refunds.

I think the advice you were given is a good chance of getting your money back (try asking around here on Dakka). Alternatively, you could sell the rewards you get on Ebay or something. If there is any exclusive products, those often go for higher prices than the original pledge amounts, so if you are lucky you could even turn a profit.

Having gone back and forth with them during the campaign on the topic, you're probably hosed. I've got 300 bucks of shoddy slippery easily broken resin than I can't be assed to inventory to sell off because half of it was never attached to a sprue in the first place. The blade maidens were kind nice thought, so I've got about 10 miniatures I actually liked out of it. No real use for them, but hey.

That's pretty much word for word the same response I got when I tried for a refund shortly after the campaign ended (I wasn't too happy with how much they simplified the basic Sisters minis between concept art and 3D render, or the poor job they did giving them all "battle heels").

You're probably best off doing what I did, pick what looks interesting and put them on Ebay.

Thank you for your replies and sorry for not responding sooner, I was away visiting family for my birthday!

You've all basically confirmed what I was originally going to do, and try to sell this off somehow. It's just that it sounds like effort and I'm really not good at that. But I'll give it a shot.

You might be able to sell the credit and let someone else pick their minis; they are at a reasonable discount Vs the webstore. I'd be tempted but only with a silly offer; someone will probably be willing to give you nearer your credit value (£100-150).

Or just order whatever seems the most popular (probably whatever is the closest match to a 40K unit) and stick them on eBay.

But yeah, it's not a store - you funded a project which happened, the reward is more of a perk. There's always some risk it goes wrong.
