Hiya everyone I am currently trying to figure out what type of modelling cases to bring my army of space marines in. Currently, I transport them in makeshift cardboard boxes and it has led to lackluster results of broken models and chipping... While also being extremely awkward to carry. I've had so many bad experiences with the previous carry cases that GW owned that I was a bit dissuaded from using their cases for some time.

I finally thought "Enough is enough!"

So I was wonder what the good folks at dakka dakka would recommend for good modeling case transportation.

For Reference, I have a very sizeable space marine army (well over 175 models, 12 tanks, 2 land raiders, and five dreadnoughts).

I actually use them quite a bit for painting and for general transportation as people like to use my models for small games or larger games.

I was initially recommended to get the Gamesworkshop Crusade Case . But I got irked by the price.

Does anyone know of any other good places to get good model cases? (I am more than willing to spend the cash though)

Thanks ahead of time!

I use BattleFoam, but that case you linked to is way cheaper than BattleFoam.

I have the issue where I don't like foam cases because of the pressure it always ends up putting on fiddly bits and pieces, leading to breakage.

Now I magnetize all my bases and use TableWar carrying cases (Mk3 half case and Mk3 mini case), with magnetic sheet inserts on their trays. Supersturdy cases, and the models are held securely with no risk of pieces being broken off.

TableWar cases are what I have used for the last few years - I love them!

I experienced similar issues with foam trays. Had more than my fair share of spikey Cryx bits bend or snap off due to sticking in the foam cell. And even the best foam case doesn't allow you to look at the army while it is in storage. The display potential of the TW case is what continues to sell me on the line despite the obvious negatives: the cases are pricey, and having to magnetize your models is an added step (and cost!) in an already labor intensive hobby - but the end result is so worth it in my opinion.

https://www.krmulticase.com be sure to select the right country (they are UK based so pick the US flag on the upper right)

Also their customer service is very good if you contact them asking questions, though do spend a bit of time getting to grips with how their system works so that it makes sense before asking questions.

No matter which route you go, if you want a nice case to transport your models you will need to shell out a bit for it. It is worth it in the long run, as the army the case protects is worth far more than the case itself. I paid $150 for my Battlefoam P.A.C.K. 720 case with a selection of pluck foam trays, and I've spent a bit more on extra trays (probably another $200, all told). Battlefoam makes a huge range of quality cases and foam trays; I can't recommend them highly enough.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

For big armies I don't really bother with foam cases.
If I'm taking a huge army it's usually too big to carry so I'll be driving.
At this point it's just easier to gently pack my tanks together in a large plastic tote or crate and keep my infantry in foam trays laid on top.

If your budget does not allow you to spend 100 of $$$ on foam trays you could always make your own. Here is a link showing how to make your own custom cut trays

I have battlefoam for my Flames of War stuff. And I have GW's old and new cases for most other stuff.

The battlefoam stuff is top of the line in function and cost. The old GW foam works great for basic infantry but has challenges with bulky models and ones with delicate bits like antennae, wispy sculpting to make models look like they are crouching tigering, etc.

The new GW cases have not done a great job for me. They will hold basic troop stuff and vehicles okay but that's about it. I like them less than the old style GW cases.

What has caught my eye is Wyloch's crafting video on making your own stuff. Here's something he just put out.

If you are trying to do it on the cheap, there are a few options I used before I broke down and picked up a big battlefoam case.

For infantry, tackle bags work pretty well and are cheap. Something along the lines of: https://www.google.com/shopping/product/6359117890992530904?q=walmart+tackle+bag&client=ms-android-att-us&sa=X&biw=360&bih=512&output=search&prmd=simvn&prds=opd:240794046467111419,olvc:1,num:4,cs:1&tbs=vw:l,ss:44&ved=0ahUKEwjvprfjkvrcAhUW24MKHfyBAe8QhC0IDygA

You still have to be gentle with them as there is no padding, but aside for an occasional small repair, the served me well for years.

For vehicles miniature market has some pretty decent foam bags that are cheap and functional. They are a little on the small side so you may need two with extra trays and just swap out what you need depending on what you are bringing.

I definately recommend GW crusade case, their foam can be adjusted for bigger models, such as ogryns. I recently took part in an apocalypse game, with 12000 points army, and that one crusade case hold all of my infantry (nearly 400 models). Though rest of my army was carried in a few boxes. I'm considering about getting another crusade case, if my army gets any bigger.

Since you are US based, check out your local Walmart for Pistol or Rifle cases.. 12-20 bucks with really nice foam.
