Titanicus was a good one, really gets across the dual reality of the Imperium, gives us some good descriptions of average Imperial life, and has some awesome Titan combat to boot!

I enjoyed Titanicus too, but I think I prefered the Ultramarines and Blood Angels omnibuses.

Rather than individual books, I'm going to highlight three series, plus one honourable mention.

- Ciaphas Cain
- Eisenhorn (your call on if you include the Ravenor books in here as well)
- Gaunt's Ghosts

Honourable mention to the Space Wolf series by William King.

I hated beast arises. Weird how different opinions can be on literature and things.

I can second titanicus. Great book. Baneblade too. Very good.

I'm only one book into The Beast Arises, and have read mixed reviews about it. Most criticism seems to be it feels drawn out, is that fair criticism?

I'm not really sure on my favourite book. I like a lot of the obvious ones, Ciaphas Cain, Gaunt, Eisenhorn. I've just read the Yarrick omnibus and the two novels in that were great, although the one based on the 2nd war for Armageddon ends incredibly abruptly.

From what I have read recently, Cadia stands was a good read, and Cult of the Spiral Dawn was fairly average, but offered a great insight into GSC.

Reading about the armies the you collect or have interst in only help you get into the 40k universe; so I recommend everyone read or listen about their interest.

Outside of the series already mentioned, I thought ‘15 hrs’ was quite memorable. It’s a old stand alone about a Cadian whiteshield.

I only got one book into it. Got the same impression, seemed they were making a series out of what could’ve been a book or trilogy. It was like they were trying to capture the same enthusiasm as the HH books but the story wasn’t big enough. I read it because I love ORKS and their wasn’t really one in it. And then I heard about prime ORKS and I hate that idea. So at £10 a book, I was out. Very disappointing. I hoped for a good look at ORK kultur and a waaagh in action. What I got was made up new giant ORKS and marines feeling sorry for them selves.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hellsreach is a good read too. And I’m not a fan of the templars but it showed them as 3 dimensional conflicted characters and thus more interesting.

Yeah, the old boxtree publications were generally much better. Drachenfels, Beasts in Velvet (despite the unnecessary cameos), and the Laughter of the Dark Gods short story in Ignorant Armies still stand out over twenty years since I first read them.

From the more recent publications, Pandorax, Storm of Iron, Flight of the Eisenstein and Betrayer are all decent reads.

Flight of the Eisenstein gets my vote, though I've started Storm of Iron recently, so we'll see.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Necropolis. It’s the perfect grim dark setting. An entire hive falls to chaos and marches to war down to every last man, women and child. There is no happy ending. The imperium wins but the city is declared dead.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against it. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the end comes.

Necropolis is a great demonstration of the concept of Total War taken to the furthest degree, I'd say, even against the 40K universe.

Storm of Iron was my first 40K book, and I think it's one of the best straight-up warfare books. Loads of good stuff in there.

the books aren't my favorite, but they do hold a special place for me in that they're the first books I read where I understood how SCARY Orks where. Orks where previously always sort of crude, stupid, often comedy relief, dangerous sure but B list threat at best. Beast arises showed me how the Orks could be a threat on a scale with chaos and Tyranids.
