I'm building my first army in over a decade (Space Wolves) and I don't have much experience with 8th Ed, so I have a question.

How do Razorback's stand up in the current game? I always liked the idea of a mobile force, and I have a soft spot for the double lascannon Razorback. My current plan for my 1750 SW army involves 4 6-man squads of Grey Hunters in double lascannon Razorbacks. That way I have some mobile guys who can grab objectives and such but also have some long range punch.

I use them, and they are somewhat effective. Just know that razorbacks aren't as hard to take down as we might think. That, and the -1 to hit when moving tends to make them instead favor a firing line, and then use the mobility to score late in the game.

However, I prefer the twin assault cannon razorbacks with storm bolters to give me a solid dakka base.

When I break out my Marines I use a few 5 man tac squad with a plasma in a dual assault cannon razorback. No longer a tournament winning choice but solid. As long as you treat them like a transport and not a main battle tank you'll do fine with them.

+1

Twin assault cannon razorbacks are quite fearsome. You will need some efficient anti-infantry firepower, and this version of razorbacks can provide a great amount.
For the razorbacks to do their job of transporting troops, you will have to hamper the chances to hit, which on a pricey, low rate of fire gun, is not a good idea.
Sure, you will also need some laser cannons in your army, but to wield these, devastators and predators are better choices, as by design they sit back and shoot.

Keep also in mind that would cost you half your points and you need also at least 2 characters. Not much points left for the fun stuff like TWC and Wulfen. I would start with 2 Razorbacks and one GH unit on foot and try out different things before I would commit to 4 razors.

Thanks everyone. I'll stick to 2 at first, and it sounds like trying Assault Cannons first would be a good idea.

Sounds good.
If you are going Space Wolves, Long Fangs are going to be the superior lascannon platform for anti-armor duties.

Yup, AC Razorbacks are decent and Grey Hunters are probably the best MEQ Troop unit.

I normally run 5 Hunters with a plasma gun and possibly a plasma pistol on the pack leader. Then I add a Wolf Guard pack Leader with combi-plas for some extra firepower. That is potentially 5 S8, AP-3, 2D shots at close range which can be followed up a decent charge with 13 attacks hitting on 2s.

Pretty respectable for their points.

Well, I ordered 3 AC turrets for my Razorbacks from FW. So 3 5-man squads each in a Twin AC Razorback.

Sounds like adding a Plasma gun to each squad is a good idea, so that's the next plan.

I like running my squads with a sarg with a chainsword and stormbolter, and 1 plasma gun.

Can the pack leader also get a Combi-plasma, or is that only available for the WG pack leader? That would be basically 3 Plasmas in a unit of 6, very respectable and a perfect fit in a RB

WG only. Pack leader can only have power sword/axe/fist
