Anyone else getting sex ads on the upper right? I just noticed this......Seriously Dakka, you need the cash?

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase.

Ads are not the same for each user. The ads you see are chosen by an algorithm that is tailored to your digital footprint mate

Yep Dakka uses Google Ads which;

This ad is based on:
Google's estimation of your interests
The time of day or your general location (such as your country or city)

I'm currently seeing car insurance Ads as I've been shopping around for car insurance recently.

This was definitely the best thread to check just before heading to work. Great way to start the shift

I haven't had any sex ads, but I've had a suspicious number of Foreign Dating ads, considering I'm 24 years married and definitely not in the market and don't even look at those kind of sites..

It's just a flaw of programmatic advertising algorithms.

I think it's got worse since GDPR came in, because a lot of people (like me) have gone around switching off all the programmatic advertising options, and this buggers up the system worse for everyone else.

I can't believe Dakka and all its righteous censoring of certain words and posts allows for the viewing of smut on its site! Unreal.

I wish I could get some ads with some naked ladies in them when I log in. All I am getting is a ‘15% off Fernando Miniature Painting’ ad. Lame.

Dakka is actually one of the few sites I have Ad Block switched off for although I can't recall ever clicking on an Ad here and I think you have to click the Ad for them to get any income (but I stand to be corrected).

I should add that the Google Ads are interspersed with gaming related ads so it's a mix of both - Starbreach is top right for me now.

Ad algorithm is bit weird. At least I'm getting now ads for books but why finnish book store for finnish books? I don't think I have visited finnish book store web page in couple years nor bought any finnish books. Indeed apart from couple HH novels I have bought only japanese books lately so something like japanese amazon would make more sense!

Then again I don't even see those ads. Now I deliberately checked what it's even showing. Dakkadakka is nice in that the ads aren't getting to eyes all the time annoyingly.

Something must be off about the ad generator from my computer. I'm at work and it always shows Asian Dating site ads for me.
My search history is exclusively 40K related, maybe a little Star Wars. How in the world does it come up with Asian Dating site ads?
I prefer Latinas and am married to one.

Unless the algorithm defaults to that when info is lacking? It would make sense because the majority of the world is of Asian decent and dating sites are popular?

Like most websites Dakka has limited control over what ads appear when you use the site since the ad space is filled by the ad provider not DakkaDakka itself.

So short version of your seeing porn ads that’s on your end.

Also why A lot of people refuse to turn off ad blocker. Websites generally carry no responsibility for what ads are show and ad providers are a sleazy business. It spreads malware like crazy. I’ll turn off ad blocker when sites take responsibility for what ads their showing.

Edit and seriously autocorrect is the worst thing

I don't see ads due to my adblock, so I couldn't tell you. But usually the google section of ads are tied to your personal browsing habits. I would suggest browsing incognito whenever possible, that should fix this issue.

Well at the risk of being called a racist, I personally know a number of Asian women and a few men, and they all seem to have a much more open view of all these "nerdy" hobbies as compared to most of the western men and women I know, even if they aren't interested in participating. Maybe there is a connection?

This belongs on Nuts & Bolts rather than Off-Topic, but whatever.

I believe you can actually disable personalized ad content in favour of a more generic offering, but I can't remember how.

I needed to do it because Google was under the impression I was very interested in scareware ads that cause your phone to vibrate.

It's not always an obvious trail. I never got dating site ads from Google until I got married. The day I updated my Facebook status, I started getting those ads.

Pretty much the only thing I do on social media is my #deadbikesofoxford Instagram feed.

I don't know what kind of ads that would lead to.

Targeted ads are pretty damned annoying at times. On my work computer I get ads for war gaming even though I NEVER use my work computers to look up war gaming stuff.

Occasionally in the past I would get (not on here) ads that looked like softcore hentai in spite of never looking at it myself (don't claim to be an angel, just not in to that stuff), at most I could say I occasionally looked at Facebook pages of friends who were in to it, but really, ads by association?

Either way, the original concern has been addressed, and this is turning into a discussion that is not really suited to N&B, so let's all agree that targeted ads are sometimes a source of amusement and/or frustration, and move on.
