Hi Dr Nick!

Do you remember when that was good? Yeah, long time ago. It's not a great joke but it's the best I could think of on the spot to break the ice.

I'm completely new to the hobby and planning to start a Dark Angels collection. I watched a lot of videos on painting, researched some lore (in order to make an informed decision about what army I wanted to start with... I totally want to build some other armies too, but best to walk before running) and enjoyed watching a few battle report videos. I thought I'd join this forum because I've been doing a little browsing for information.

My current plan is to get the start collecting space marines kit and a Dark Angels upgrade pack so I can put together a tactical squad as my first project and have the captain and dreadnought for following projects. One question I haven't been able to figure out, how do I make the standard space marine vehicles into Dark Angels vehicles? I know there are specific Ravenwing vehicles and some are supposed to be part of the Deathwing, but I've also seen things like Rhinos and Crusaders done in a Dark Angels colour scheme with their insignia on. Yet I haven't found a video which shows how the insignia has come about. Any thoughts on this one would be much appreciated. I've ordered a copy of the 8th edition codex for the Dark Angels so I should get some info on colour schemes and painting alongside the lore and battle tactics stuff. Any other recommendations to get myself ready? I'd say I've got a couple of weeks before I've got the money together to be able to afford the next step, so plenty of time to learn!

Hi!

Sounds like you have already done your research quite nicely.

Dark Angels are a cool chapter as they will kill anyone who knows their secrets, giving you a good reason to fight other Imperium factions!
They have cool successor chapters too, maybe give them a look before you commit? They can give you a more unique army whilst keeping the same flavour and rules.

Vehicle decals should be available on transfer sheets, but don't quote me on that!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

G'day and welcome to Dakka and to the hobby!

Dark Angels are a great choice as Kroem said. They've got a nice amount chapter-specific kits available which really helps in getting your models looking appropriately Dark Angel-y!
Sound like you've done some good preliminary research and the Codex is a great place to start. With making vehicles like Rhinos and Land Raiders specifically Dark Angels themed, much of that comes down to the paint job! In the past there has been a Dark Angels transfer sheets available, though I'm not sure if these are still. Also in the vehicle boxes I believe they used to include transfers for a couple of the major chapters, though I'm not sure if they still do (its been a while since I brought a vehicle). Forgeworld also does some chapter specific vehicle doors and panels if you want to go the extra mile but that can be an expensive route, especially if you're just starting out.

Do you want to go down the Primaris or regular marine route with your Dark Angels, or do a mix of the two?
