So I was doing this just for myself and it got a bit complicated and took way longer so I figured this is worth sharing with others!

What follows is a list of the publications (books/ebooks) from Black Library and their collected versions for Age of Sigmar. This intends to be an aid to those new to the stories so that you can easily find out what best purchases to make on your quest to delve deeper into the mystical magical realms.
If you are looking for Classic Fantasy from Warhammer and the world before then check out this post here https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/762803.page#10126076

A few key notes:

1) Many of these titles and collected editions are sold on Amazon Kindle store as well as direct from Black Library. If you read on a Kindle then the Amazon Store is the best place to purchase from for a compatible copy of the ebooks.

2) Many of the short stories get added into collected editions/novel collections at a latter date. Thus you might consider waiting on buying them and instead see if they are put into a collected edition (which will typically be cheaper). This is no guarantee that they will be added, some never will. So do mind the release date on the books and use your own judgement.

3) If I have made mistakes, or new publications/collected editions have come out please post in the thread to tell me and I will do my best to edit in the changes/new publications.

The publications in brackets after a title are the collected edition(s) which feature that story

Superseded collected editions. These are earlier collected editions of publications which are either inferior or more expensive than options listed eariler. They are listed for completeness sake, but I would advise looking at more recent combined editions for the best prices:
The Realmgate Wars eBook Collection (War Storm, Ghal Maraz, Hammers of Sigmar)

Mighty Battles (best avoided - cheaper to get the Realmgates Wars Vol 1 and Call of Chaos Quick Read Collection which has more content)

The Realmgate Wars: The Novels (Entire Realmgate Series - BUT more expensive than the two Collected Volumes above, which also included some extra stories - best ignored)

Yes after doing well with Age of Sigmar I decided to start tackling the grand classic era of Warhammer! There are a LOT more books and short stories here, but unlike AoS there is far less silly messing around and the number of collected editions is at a much more sane level. Now the are a few things to note:

1) GW appears to be republishing some of these stories (in print and ebook format) in collected editions of series (and short stories). As a result some series presented here as individual listings might, at some point in the future, be released in a collected edition. Bare this in mind when purchasing; however there is no guarantee that any series will get collected together.

2) I have no idea as to time-lines with these. I have broadly kept the listings as they are shown on the Black Library website which roughly has the newest at the top and the oldest at the bottom.

3) I have split the listings into three groups for Novels; Collected editions (both collected books and short stories), multi-book series and stand alone books.  Unlike the AoS page, if an individual book is part of a collected edition I only list the collected edition (which does show all books/short stories contained within on its listing). This is purely to make the listings easier to read for new people without having to keep cross referencing different lists.

I've also done it on the expectation that most consulting this will be newer to the lore and setting and thus are likely making fresh purchases; where most collected editions prove to be the significantly cheaper choice.

Super massive update to both AoS and the Classic sections!

AoS has been revamped to be easier and clearer to read along with adding in all the current publications to date. In addition I've updated the classics with recent publications and added a section for the Horror series that GW is doing reprints of.

Note that to date GW has released nearly all of their AoS short stories in collected editions, in fact only the most recent release are not yet in a collected book. Thus I would say its best to hold back from purchasing them and instead focus on getting the collected editions as they prove to be the most cost effective and also come with additional stories which are not released on their own.

Some do get cross over with others, but in general there's enough unique to each book that makes them worth getting in their own right.

Just finished Scourge of Fate. Fantastic book, loved it. Particularly the give and take; both sides take damage in the battles and it doesn't suffer from the common syndrome where protagonists crush every battle easily and only struggle on the last one. Equipment and tactics matter. And it fleshes out chaos society with culture and depth which usually isn't shown.

Yeah, read that the very weekend it went up for sale as an e-book back in December. Hoping for it to be the start of a series. A sort of dark mirror to the old Bretonnian novels.

"Sometimes the only victory possible is to keep your opponent from winning." - The Emperor, from The Outcast Dead.
"Tell your gods we are coming for them, and that their realms will burn as ours did." -Thostos Bladestorm

I think GW is very keen to show Chaos as being more than frothing at the mouth fanatics. I think it fleshes them out far more so for AoS and also gives their players more identity than "blood for the blood god" within their chosen faction.

Honestly depends what you want and if you want Old World or AoS.

I've not read a huge amount of either, it was me wanting to start and getting confused on the BL website that prompted me to make these two lists.

Right now on the Old World front:
1) A lot of the old series of novels are being put into single publications now, so if you are interested in any of the "Individual Series" then I'd suggest waiting till their collected book comes out. Some also include select short stories as well. Further enhancing their value and increasing the savings (eg there's an Orion one on the Coming soon pages).

2) Personally I'm right now going through the Gotrek and Felix series in the Omnibus editions GW are publishing. They are not only great adventure stories, but also take you on a big tour of the Old World including some places that never got GW armies. So you get to see all kinds from vampires to various humans to the Chaos Wastes etc... So its a great way to experience a lot of the world whilst being grounded with a pair of characters. I've also got nearly all the way though the Ulkrika series that spins off after the 2nd Omnibus, although I feel like the author they got for that series isn't as good - they are not badly written in so much as the character feels like there's something missing.

On the AoS front:
1) I've started working through the Realmwars novels; they are a bit heavy going in so much as they are very battle heavy and rather like on actual world building. Being some of the first novels in a new setting and also being designed to be war stories its more a limit of their situation than the authors themselves.

2) Pestilens was the first AoS novel I read and its fantastic fun! Get it as part of the omnisbus edition its in for some savings - though the Fyreslayer stories in it are not that good in my view; the Sylvanath are nice reads and flesh out some more of them whilst.

3) I strongly recommend the Novella series books that cover AoS; they are fantastic fun and each one is worth a read. They are good adventures in their own right, but also flesh out the world settings greatly. They are not as heavy as a full novel, but they are thicker than a short story so they can introduce far more twists and turns.

4) I'd also strongly recommend the new Inferno books, the AoS stories are good solid short tales and there's even one series that runs book to book.

5) Note I recommend NOT buying any of the short stories on their own. Whilst some of them do get repeated in some collected editions more than once; they are nearly all but the newest, now located within collected edition books. It seems that BL's intention is to publish them as short online stories and then later collect them together into at least one or two collected edition books after a few months.

Weren’t things like Wulfrik, Red Duke, etc also in the Warhammer Heroes line, you’ve only got two in there currently..

Great resource to have. Particularly for AoS as I’m not really far into the new setting, only Fantasy..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
To add,
Sigvald, Luthor Huss, Van Horstmann, Queek Headtaker, Valkia.
There was a dwarf one too, but I never got that far.
I’ll check my others when I get home, but think they were all Heroes books..

Inferno! AoS stories are pretty good IMO. If you are reasonably familiar with the setting these are some of my favorites:
-Scourge of Fate (highly recommend)
-Overlords of the Iron Dragon
-Pestilens
-Red Feast

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Updated with the newest books, I've also given Gotrek his own section for the AoS including the audiobooks as well as the written material.

I might be a bit behind on the horror segment.

Updated with a selection of newer books.
AoS - I've put a listing for a reading order for Gotrek's tales, however I'm not sure where Neverspike and Bone Desert sit in the time-line established thus far. I've read Bone Desert and it seems to sit at least after the Realmslayer audio books; meanwhile I've not read Neverspike nor Ghoulslayer (though my impression is that Neverspike will either be set before or after ghoulslayer and more likely after).

There's also a nice range of new books for AoS coming up including:
Court of the Blind King
Profit's Ruin - follows right on from Overlords of the Iron Dragon
The Hammer and the Eagle (a combined AoS and 40K book which might well contain short/novella length stories that are otherwise sold outside of it - no idea yet).
Oaths and Conquests - another anthology likely to contain many of the newer short stories, plus a few unique ones of its own.
Lady of Sorrows
Inferno 5 (which has a very neat Corvus Cabal cover)

Classic Warhammer side I've added the newest publication of Thanquol and Boneripper. I've also put a mention that the Gotrek and Felix Anthology of short stories contains stories which are now all part of the omnibus editions of the stories.

In addition note that Heroes of the Empire is coming in February - most likely containing at the very least Sword of Justice and Sword of Vengeance - might also have shorts but I don't know of any and far as I know BL hasn't released the contents of the book formally yet.

Also, if BL keeps publishing the collected story editions then we could well see all the listed series of tales released next year.

Lady of Sorrows has a release date in April, along with Inferno 5. Theres also a big Grayham McNeill collection of Elf books in a single volume for Warhammer Chronicles coming in May.

Plus don't forget next week is Black Library week! With a slew of short stories through the week; a collected printed short story collection and also some print on demand including the Filthy Ratmen lorebook!
