Hey guys, I ran into a bit of a problem. I played a game with a friend of mine and we got into a disagreement. I know that models can shoot through friendly models in the same unit but that other units block LOS. My friend has his Demon Prince standing behind a chaos rhino and I had a squad of GH on the other side. He then declared he was going to shoot at my GH because his DP can see over the rhino. I told him that's not how that works and that the rhino is blocking line of site but he disagreed. Who was right in this situation. I know shooting over units is the case with IK and Flyers but is that the case with a DP?

Thanks for any help guys.

If you can see it, you can shoot it (unless it's a character with fewer than 10 wounds on its profile, in which case it also has to be the closest unit to the shooting unit).

Your friend was right. As per the Stepping Into a New Edition FAQ:
Q: How do I determine if a model is visible to another model?
A: The models are visible to each other if you can draw a straight, uninterrupted line between any part of one model to any part of the other.
If even a single square femtometer of the Grey Hunters is visible to the Daemon Prince, the DP can shoot at the GH, period.

What that rule means is that models/units can block line of sight, much like terrain can. But you'll have to get down and look. Its NOT saying that units create an automatic bubble of "Can't see through this" around them. Its still based on their physical mass.

So a Space Marine can hide behind a Land Raider because you can easily block his entire body with the mass of the Land Raider. But it will be much tougher if not impossible to have the opposite happen. Though if an enemy model is theoretically drawing line of sight through a single tiny window and that Space Marine steps in front of the window then the Land Raider could be blocked by the Space Marine.

So it really depends on if the Daemon Prince was big enough to see over the Rhino based on the actual physical locations of the models. If the Daemon Price was sitting in a hole and the Rhino was on a hill and the Grey Hunters were sitting on the other side of the hill the LoS could potentially be blocked. If they were all on flat terrain though it is unlikely that LoS was blocked.

Assuming land raider is sideway. As there's empty area at the bottom feet of enemy will be able to draw LOS to feet of marine from the BOTTOM of the land raider..Lovely rules 8th ed has.

It's the "price" we pay for having a single, unified LOS rule. No more arguing about whether my Space Marine can draw LOS along "eye" level, or arguing that because Wrathguard don't actually have eyes they can't ever shoot anything.
