I keep seeing people throwing around this term all the time, both referring to others, but also worrying about if they are becoming or could be TFG! However I see it being misused all the time and I see people sticking the label where it just does not belong. As a short clipped term designed to show scorn/dislike of another person I feel it would be good to have a pause and remind ourself just who TFG is!
So here are a few types/thoughts/views - - baring in mind that there will be some variety and difference between each person personal interpretation of the term.
TFG is NOT the person who always brings tournament lists; or who "net lists" or who happens to have broken combos in their army. They don't even count when they list tailor to counter a known opponents list.
Nope none of those, those are just skilled people building good lists and without Context they are perfectly fine normal gamers.
TFG is the person who:
1) Brings that super powered list against known new players specifically for the easy win. They might not even be using an "overpowered" list, but they are the kind of player who will prey on beginners and the less experienced/skilled. They will target those people for dead easy wins without any real view to helping the other person learn the game or progress or even have a fair chance.
2) Brings that tailored list out only after they've seen their opponents list and does not give their opponent chance or opportunity to offer their own alterations to their list to counter. Ergo they prey on situations which allow them to list tailor without allowing their opponent any such chance.
3) Doesn't just bring a strong list, but will make mistakes within the army list that benefit them. These will be mistakes that they repeat even when they are pointed out to them (as opposed to a normal mistake where a player will correct the error and aim to avoid similar in the future).
4) Will continue to use that same overpowered list even when requested of to try something different to provide challenge/variety for their opponent.
TFG is also the person who:
1) Will cheat when they can get away with it. They will make repeat mistakes; they will stall and slow gameplay; they will pick up dice super fast after rolling or roll critical dice off the table every so often and swipe them up off the floor before they can be checked. They will move cheat; they will model for advantage; they will miss-remember rules in their favour; they will question the opponent to undermine them etc..
Importantly TFG will do this all the time even when they get caught. They might behave themselves for one game or a bit of a game if they are caught; but unlike normal mistakes by regular players, TFG will seek to make those mistakes over and over again. Smarter ones will rotate through a selection of variable mistakes to try and avoid showing a pattern.
2) Will be very generous and accept your side of an argument if a rules disagreement in an event gets to a point where you're starting to or thinking of calling a judge over. They'll admit their mistake then and encourage you to not report it or even write them up - they might even throw back some minor mistake the other player has made almost as a deal "I won't report you for X so you don't report me for Y". They will aim to not get those reports so that they can keep cheating without building up a long history of reported mistakes/cheats.
3) Play without rules/codex and even encourage the other player to do likewise; they will then make up rules for their army and in their favour for the rest of the game.
4) Will be obnoxious when winning or losing. On a win they will rub their opponents face in it; on a lose they will whine complain and generally do whatever they can to sour the experience for the other player. This isn't just at the end, but will run through the entire game typically.
5) Won't just come to the club unwashed, but will refuse to make any change to their personal hygiene when the subject is raised to them (in a polite fashion).
6) Will talk behind other players back and spread rumours and lies about others that they don't like. They will seek to undermine others at the club an might found lies or twist facts to try and one-up others. They might well focus and take out this on people who have "wronged" them - eg someone who won a much against them.
7) Will not be polite during the game nor after. They might be more tolerable if they are winning, but they will take great offence at any perceived and actual loss.
Note - thankfully few TFG exhibit all the known behaviour types; although most will display more than one and might even cycle through various behaviour types over time.
In short TFG is a CHEATER and BULLY who is out for them and them alone - ergo self centred and selfish. They have little to no interest in the community or the club; they've no interest in making a fun playing experience and only want to have their fun and eat their cake, and your cake!
They won't easily change their behaviour (short term some might appear to change when caught out and challenged; but will revert back or just avoid interacting/playing those who challenged them) or attempt to improve.
So those are my thoughts on TFG - that its not a causal term, but one applied to a very specific group of people who are thankfully quite rare all told. I'd encourage you to share your thoughts and views and perceptions as well as any tales or stories of TFG that you've encountered.
