I suspect critical system failure. Fire might as well be tied with water as the number one destroyer of irreplaceable things. All it takes is one time and whatever you had is just gone. Damn shame.

On moon miranda.

That is truly a sad event, I hope the damage is minimal, but it doesnr look like it.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Honestly unless they have vaults and they were sealed it looks like it may be a total loss which is so sad.

Wow, from the pictures it's completely engulfed . That's terrible... hopefully it's just a horrible accident and not malicious.

Honestly it sounds like one of our Smithsonians going up in flames, a national tragedy if there ever was one

It is a bad year for historic buildings going on fire.

However a national museum being destroyed is a very bad event.

20million items were reportedly stored there. Some like fossils might salvageable. But things like mummies, ancient documents, oldest skeleton found in america are probably all gone. Apparently it was suffering from a lack of funding and had fallen into disrepair. Made out of firewood, full of dry paper and lack of fire controls it was probably an inevitability.

However it't not the only thing that burnt down last night. The iconic Littlewoods building in liverpool also

"Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V

It's shocking that such a building can be left unused for 15 years, and a great pity that it was about to start a regeneration project.

I read that whatever failure happened that made saving the stuff impossible was because of austerity measures that were needed after all the spending on the olympics :/

So you're saying all those people who complained that Brazil couldn't afford an Olympics were right all alone

lol.... I was going to give the correct fix to avoid this from happening in the future, but the answer is philosophical, and then by extension, political.

"the Brasilian citizenry is reaping what it has sown" is the most non political answer I can give.

As a Brasilian, all I can say is, I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner....

Only half right, there was also the world cup that Brazil couldn't really afford. I think the one stadium they build in the middle of the jungle is already being reclaimed by the local flora and fauna.

Just need to get creative. I'm sure we could serialize a post-appoc jungle survival deathmatch show somewhere

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

A story I read had only a single item survive the fire, a meteorite. Everything else was a total loss.

Well some professors got some items. One some short of shells-etc exploring scientist managed to bring part of his collection from there.

Other museums, including some Dutch ones are saying they want to help the Brazilian museum rebuild a collection.

...

Very nice of them, but I'm not sure giving expensive and/or important cultural artefacts to a criminally underfunded institution that has already been destroyed once is a very good idea...

A lot of museums have display items on show so other institutions could at least let them restore a public showing gallery for education and inspiration. That at least would be low risk as the original material wouldn't be lost.

Another aspect is that museums are often a focal point for education and research in many subject areas and can often coordinate research research efforts not just within the country and for itself; but also with research groups wanting access from other countries. So other institutions will have a vested interest in that museum restoring itself to a functional level so that they in turn can help ensure easier access to the country - since whilst they have had a disaster of a loss there are still relics and other items that will be found within the country that will migrate back toward a national collection.
