There has been some movement in the sixth Die Hard movie. The fifth movie, A Good Day to Die Hard, came out in 2013 to a pretty good $300+ million worldwide box office but was slaughtered by critics. It seems that the sixth entry in the series, which was rumored to be called Die Hard: Year One, has a script and a new title according to Empire Magazine and producer Lorenzo diBonaventura.

“You can tell our intention by the fact that the title page we handed in says, ‘McCLANE’,” producer Lorenzo diBonaventura told Empire. “We want you to get invested in John McClane more than ever before.” He added that, despite rumours that the prequel section would take up more of the runtime, the sequel-prequel approach will feature Bruce Willis just as much as his younger incarnation. “I don’t know how you do Die Hard without Bruce,” he said. “The idea that he’s not very significant in this movie is not accurate at all. We are gonna explore John McClane in his twenties. But just as prominent is the 60-year-old version.”

The script was handed in back in July, and Len Wiseman is set to direct. The movie currently has no release date, but they are expecting production to begin rather soon. This series has made $1.4 billion over the course of five movies since 1988 (unadjusted for inflation).

It sound like a load of crap trading on our genuine affection for the first two or three films which were actually good and of their time and so on.

How old is Bruce Willis now? Not to be age-ist -- I'm no spring chicken myself -- but there comes a time when you have to hang up the action Zimmer Frame.

He was good in Red because the whole film was based on the jokey premise of a bunch of senior citizen spies going back into action and reversal of expectations.

That was in 2010.

'pedia puts Willis as being 63 this year.

... one would imagine that most American police officers have retired by then -- unless of course they've have been killed or suddenly framed for a crime they didn't commit, just a day or so prior to them being able to retire -- but what are the odds on that happening eh ?

... part 5 was the one in Russia IIRC..

... yyeeaahh, think that was enough really.

Still guess this means we're just a few years away from a full recasted reboot right ?

Wouldn't a prequel adventure destroy the entire premise of the first movie, wherein John McClane was a sympathetic Everyman trapped in an extraordinary situation?

Yes, but do such considerations of artistic integrity stand in the way of Hollywood's braindead and creatively bankrupt urge to try and grub a few more dollars off a formerly respected franchise?

He was a cop, not an "everyman".

In action movies protagonist cops are generally sold as everymen. The phrase "I'm just a cop!" exists for a reason.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

He was an ordinary police officer, a normal guy just trying to make up with his wife. In the book*, the protagonist is some kind of special forces anti-terrorist expert who teaches other elite forces how to elite more. The director of the movie made a conscious choice to make McClane more of a relatable underdog, an Everyman.

*Die Hard is based on the book Nothing Lasts Forever, by Roderick Thorpe. I do not recommend reading it because film is superior in every way.

Yep, a prequel would be disastrous.

I'm a fan of the original (obviously), the third one, and the fourth one. The second was gak, and the fifth was equally gak (shame since I love Russia and thought we'd get one as enjoyable as number four...and we didn't).

Die Hard and Vengeance are all you need. Bruce Willis at his exasperated-with-the-world best and two bloody awesome bad guys.

Like all good films, just ignore that crap releases, they don't count. The Matrix was only one film, the Terminator ended after it lowered itself into the steel works, Peter Jackson stopped after the Lord of the Rings and the only Transformers movie was a cartoon from 1986 that featured Leonard Nimoy.

Oh Odin no! Not more of this! The previous movies where all bad, but this I think will set a new standard for the series

Concur. And if anyone hasn't yet seen the Death Wish remake ... really, don't. It's awful. He's awful. And I say that as a huge Bruce fan.

In minority here, but I also quite liked the second Die Hard, it and the first one are some of the best Christmas movies ever.

I dunno, i don't think the Die Hard franchise has been flogged to within an inch of its life yet. Part 5 was the only terrible film in the franchise (2 was bad, but definitely not terrible) so it can redeem itself from there.

Sure, Bruce is pretty old but we may be able to eek one more decent Die Hard film out of him.

What we could really do with is a new franchise that follows in the same spirit as Die Hard but with someone younger taking the lead. I can’t see that happening any time soon though.

For me the second one suffers from knowing too much about the subject of the film. One or two slip ups with aircraft systems is ok, but the film is a barrage of avionics bollocks.

The second movie has Miles O'Brien flying an airplane. It gets a pass from me.

They'll make it as long as people watch it...if we have anybody to blame it's ourselves. How many genuine "good" or "great" movies are blockbusters each year, one or two? The rest is just entertaining popcorn-munching fodder developed to a formula determined by market research. I enjoy movies as much as the next person, but we're not in the best age of them.

All branches of the US military have Mandatory retirement as soon as you hit age 60, IF you can stay in that long. Flag officers are exempt, of course, but your NCOs normally barely make it to 60 and even then it takes a concerted effort to do so. So if the military says 60 year olds can't do this gak, maybe Hollywood should take that clue.

If they handle it the right way, I could see it "working" (lets be real, they wont handle it right). . . So, me playing devil's advocate here, here's an angle I can see working. . .

In DH 1-3 McClane is portrayed as an "everyman" cop, with a bit of a discipline issue. We the viewers don't know what it is, but he's got authority problems and likely alcohol problems, etc. (ie, the alcohol is what led his wife to taking a job in LA leaving him in NY blah blah blah).

In this prequel-sequel, we *could* see him square off against a baddie that sort of "created" these issues, as in the proverbial "one that got away" . . maybe he's a higher ranking cop that McClane couldn't prove was a serial killer/terrorist/thief dude (whatever. . . he's a fething criminal, right?) but somewhere along the line, in McClane's 60s some gak happens and he is forced to reface all those things from way back when to clear his own name. . .

Yeah, its corny and a fairly "overdone" cop movie plot, but think about it. . . could tie things up a bit. . . and follow hollywood's braindead trend of filling in literally ALL mystery behind characters/settings we love.
