I've tuned into other majors before, but the commentators really made the stream for me. From throwing shade at the players to explaining the 'Nick Navatti' inch it really was a lot more entertaining than most streams I've seen. Their ability to follow the action and keep the watchers appraised was pretty spot on.

What did you think?

Geoff is a pleasure. He does a lot of his own streams and Starcraft stuff, too. I just wish their mics had been able to tone down all of the background chatter/hum.

Combo of the best commentators and GW's production made the best tabletop gaming stream ever. I'm sure the next tournament stream will be even better.

Do you have some link that I could see? I was working when this was streamed :(

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

If you have amazon prime you can subscribe to get all the replays. I don't know if they are going to cross post to Youtube

Well those dudes worked hard to make that schedule, but they dropped the ball a few times as far as professionalism.

Not sure if the timeframe sucked the passion out of them or they knew as well that it wasn't how it was supposed to be.

Martin and Eddie combo is something those two should strive for, maybe if they researched more or practiced more with

scripted content. I think with that in mind, these two could progress to the next level. But cheers for their effort.

I thought they were great. As noted, they really managed to walk the line between "giving you the insider's insights" into the US tournament personalities, etc.. and not getting so far into insider's jargon and insider jokes that people across the pond couldn't know what's going on. Perfect.

A lot of 40K tournament games just happen to be blow outs and aren't terribly interesting for the final 1 or 2 hours or so. That's just the game and any commentator would struggle to keep stuff interesting in those times.

it was done well enough, but still feel wargaming in general doesn't stream well, personally the editted with commentary is become my favoured battle report format, preferably less than an hour

Completely agree. I watched a little bit of it live and while I thought the commentators were OK, even they often seemed confused about what was happening, what dice rolls were for, etc. Games on the scale of 40k are terrible for live streaming, IMO. It's impossible to get both a good overview of the table and focus on the individual action at any one time. The models are too indistinct when viewed from above and the field-of-view too narrow when the camera comes in to focus on a specific unit. The tables are extremely cluttered to the point I often had trouble even seeing units on the board.

Compared to games like X-Wing or Armada, 40k and AoS are just not suited to live streaming. Those other games have a much smaller number of pieces on the board, with each piece being pretty distinctive and a relatively small number of actions and dice rolls per turn. The board being smaller also helps because you can see the entire game all in one place at one time.

Geoff and Frankie were great. If you are going to show up at tournaments to do tournament coverage, you need commentators who are experts at the subject matter - and entertaining to watch (given that games take so long). The normal GW team does a great job, sure, but they don't have the subject matter expertise (ironically) to follow-along with the action on the top tables. It makes sense that GW would bring in warhammer experts for commentators, and in Geoff's case, a professional gaming commentator.

In general, I like commentators and I like streams. Glad to see it on Warhammer. I'm not a big fan of Geoff's casting style, personally, but some people apparently are.

Now that's a great idea . I'm biased, but given how fast the game is I think it'd make a great fit!

Preferably with the poker-esque "pocket cam" . Or just have a card holder and you could use a normal camera. Knowing the cards each player is holding would make all the difference!

Only tuned in a for a few games and thought the commentators were brilliant. Calling our the dull/slow games or plays that were a bit sub-par etc.

Missed the explanation on the "Nick Nanavatti inch" could anyone elaborate for us across the pond? Caught the bit Geoff and Frankie were talking about how the European players seem more interested in the detail of measuring which slows down the game so just assumed that the Nick Nanavatti inch was more to do with looser movement and his premeasuring for shooting/charging based on the original gap, rather than the actual gap once the unit had been moved.

Yes, it started in the Nick N vs. Chaos game on the WH stream. Nick N playing a little bit loose, presumably with "intention" rather than actual precise measurement. But the contrast I thought it was set against was Geoff himself, who said he plays and insists on precise measurements.
