I’m confused about using weapons say I use the crossbow I roll 4d6 to hit, or does my hero have a Ranged combat ability

Ranged Combat is one of your attribute. When you attack with a ranged weapon, your Ranged Combat attribute tells you how many dice you can roll. So, for example if your character's ranged combat attribute is 3, you would roll 3D6 to hit.

Thx for the reply,

My confusion was on why Ranged weapons had a strength number but I now understand that if you don’t meet that number you shoot with a penalty to your target number

and the Strength number is the target number you roll to avoid damage

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.
