Hello everyone. I've long admired Infinity models, but no-one around me was playing the game. However, I understand that there's an RPG now? This sounds like an easier way to play a bit of infinity with some friends who probably wouldn't be willing to invest into the game proper. Plus I'm not currently playing any RPGs (I played a tiny bit a couple of decades ago but it never went anywhere), so it would be nice to give one a try.

I was just hoping for a bit of advice. How is the game? Is it relatively easy for players (and a DM) who've never really played proper pen-and-paper RPGs before to pick up? Other than the core book, what do I need? I have a small number of completely random Infinity models that I picked up purely because I loved how they looked (one or two of the Pan Oceana knights, two or three Ariadna soldiers, and recently a couple of Blackjacks because those things look amazing). I'm guessing I'll need some models for the PCs, but is it feasible to have a cross-faction party or should I pick a faction and have everyone start as a member? What about NPCs; if I pick up one of the starter kits would that give me a good selection of models to get started? Or should I be using paper cutouts or something to get started instead? Would the Blackjacks actually be playable?

Sorry if my questions are stupid, I just want to get all my ducks in a row before I jump in.

I haven't actually played the RPG (or the minis game either) but like you I like the setting and models, enough that I backed the RPG kickstarter to get a bunch of PDFs for the fluff and artwork.

You don't actually need models for the RPG. Combat can be done entirely 'theatre of the mind' style. It uses a version of Modiphius' own 2D20 rules system, which is used in several of their other games such as Conan, Mutant Chronicles and Star Trek.

The default assumption of the RPG is actually that the party will be from different factions but operating as a sort of special ops team under the umbrella of O-12 - effectively the setting's UN authorities. Thus characters will likely have an overarching mission but might have their own secret agendas from their factions etc. You can certainly do mono-faction parties as well though.

The core book contains lots of information on the different factions etc, I would think easily enough to run a campaign with just that. If you want to go into more detail with particular factions there are sourcebooks as well, but you certainly don't need them to play.

There's an introductory adventure and quickstart rules available for free, so you can see the basics of the rules system:

Hope that helps.

I, however, do play the system. You'll need a lot of d20s (5 per player, 8 for the GM), d6s (5-8 per player), and tokens to mark heat, momentum and infinity points. I just use the same stuff for all 3.

That's more dice than I initially expected, I'd better stock up. I've started reading the rules from the intro pdf, the resource management and roll system is interesting. Right now I'm a little concerned about scenarios/adventures; I am not prepared to try writing my own at this time, and from what I can tell there's two (what I assume are) scenario books available. I assume the main rulebook comes with an introductory adventure too - or is it the same as the one in the free PDF? Are there other sources that don't require any conversion work be useable?
