Me and a friend have decided to delve into 30k and to say im confused/a little daunted would be an understatement, we'd like to really slowly build our forces whilst still being able to play interesting games so the idea is to build an all infantry 1000pt then maybe add some armour/more elite units as time goes on. So trying to gather as much info/advice as possible before starting to build lists or make shopping lists .

Im a 40k player with only a few months experience of the 7th rules before the switch- i have the old rulebook but understand that going deeper into 30k ill need the AOD rulebook. In terms of sourcebooks, is it correct ill need both the astartes crusade army list book and the age of darkness legions book to get me started with all of the unit entries for SOH? (Ill be at WHW next week so knowing exactly what im remortgaging my house for is worth knowing)

Of course in the meantime this hasn't stopped me using secondary sources to plan the bare bones of a starting force, this is where your input would be greatly appreciated;

I love the idea of the speartip with Abaddon and his Justearin at the forefront, supported by capable infantry and hard hitting armour. Would basing a list around the Long march or black Reaving ROW with Terminators in land raiders/a spartan, reavers with jump packs and veterans/seekers around a deepstriking core of Abbadon and large squad of Justearin be a viable idea to plan around?

To start out the idea would be to use maybe a lower points HQ and maybe use pride of the legion or something like that so i can use vets/reavers as troops- then grow from there

The AOD rulebook has only tiny changes here and there(FW was too timid there. Wasted opportunity a bit) so biggest change is change of invisibility to new spell. So that's not top priority. Basically get the army list books and you are good to go.

For army your idea sounds very point heavy. How big army you are planning? That sounds like 3k minimum. Also reavers, while super cool models, are very lackluster. TAKE CARE to not overequip. I did. End result is like 250 pts for 5 guys With 1 wound. And 3+...

Justaerin are meanwhile pretty good. Less sure about Abbadon as don't have him.

Regular terminators in spartan would be expensive and 1W is bit of a bummer. Consider upping to justaerin if you can. Or just basic tacticals. 20 of those with CCW, apo and character can be decent.

Yeah i think for what we are planning, starting with terminator heavy lists probably isnt the best idea.

We were thinking of starting off with 1000pts of infantry only-

So maybe something along the lines of a Preator, pride of the legion ROW with some vet squads and maybe a seeker squad also, as i hear they're pretty effective also. Maybe one squad of terminators in there for coolness.
