I recently read a short story in the new Eisenhord book that featured an asylum full of veterans. If that's not available, I imagine a commissar will simply dispose of officer once they break down.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Most likely shot by the Commissar, someone whose survived long eneugh to retire might be put into a place to get him help if he's REALLY lucky. if the officer is a hero he may before he burns completely out be pulled from the front lines and be sent on morale boosting trips.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

1) Shot by the commissar for failure to fix bayonets
2) Won the 'lottery' and was part of a decorated imperial unit given governership of a world.
3) Goes mad and is sent to a hospital world with a nice set of chains and occasional checks for chaos infection.

in the Ciaphas Cain (HERO OF THE IMPERIUM) books a guard Medicae sanatorium in the sigma pavonis system for guard suffering from mental illness and combat fatigue. He mentions people going a bit 'Siggy' So there is some help available as Amberley says they are assessed and rehabilitated, with some returning to duty and others staying for long term care.

Amberley also says coincidentally the systems other claim to fame is a major factory for combat servitors......

Depends on the rank, but I would assume the best they could hope for is a quck bolt to the head.

"Back to the front line officer" A commissar would most likely kill them for moral, Commissars don't just stop troops from fleeing, they are also responsible for moral of the troops. Having officers show weakness isn't something that would be tolerated.

Execution is a waste of a perfectly good bolt shell. It would be far preferable to grant the officer the privilege of making a solo assault on the enemy lines so that his death may waste the enemy's ammunition.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
