From what I've been reading, most of the southern states in the path of Florence began preparations last week, including lifting restrictions to allow farmers to harvest their crops more quickly and store them. Hopefully with the governments actually putting the effort in, damage should be minimum, since they already have hurricane experience. If it manages to come far up enough the coast to hit us in PA and NJ, then there will be trouble. We are still flooding out in certain areas in eastern PA from something as small as a light shower, or someone dropping a water bottle. Heavy rains would be disastrous for us right now.

The biggest problem for the East Coast right now is how damn wet the summer has been, everything is already saturated far beyond anything that could remotely be considered normal. The rain from Florence is likely to cause serious flooding.

I'm now living in Cape May, NJ (bayside, but still...) so if it does come up the coast, it'll be interesting.

At least I'm not living on the islands anymore. Yeesh.

No kidding about the rain - it has rained practically every day in Jacksonville Florida for almost 4 months. The real danger with this besides flooding is cat 4 wind will rip trees right out of the soggy ground. I really hope this one takes a wild turn northward and out into the ocean!

Yeah, so offering my professional opinion here, don't eff around with this storm Dakka-ites. Prepare for flooding. Sandbags will be your friend. Florence is going to lose a lot of power fast once it makes landfall, but that just means winds will die down quick, not the amount of rainfall.

I'm lucky that I'm quite a bit above sea level and the nearest moving water bit is something like 4-5 miles away and in the middle of what amounts to a deep ravine.

Not looking forward to the trees though. It's been so dry that we'll have loose trees quickly becoming a problem.

Is your property on level ground? That will help

Yeah this point needs to be made with anyone you talk to who is refusing to evacuate. It's not about whether they feel that they are in danger, it's about all of the people (police, fire, rescue, military) that will have to put their lives on the line to save them if things go a bit worse than they think it might. If you claim to care about your local police force, fire department, or military members then get the feth out when they tell you too.

Yep, I've tried explaining that to them but my dad is "worried about his pool," which is by far the stupidest fething thing anyone could be worrying about when a storm of historic proportions is bearing down on their house.

Thats nothing to take lightly. I still check when I jump into a pool because of this:

That’s the frustrating part. They know better and yet refuse to leave. I’m also pretty sure they’ve done nothing to cover the many windows in their house and now with the way the storm is tracking, the maximum wind area is pretty much guaranteed to be right over top of them.

My anger at their stupidity grows with every passing moment.

Sometimes you just gotta let evolution happen and clean the gene pool.

That might mean you’re next, if your genes are found wanting

I’m pretty low on the deployment priority, but I guess I better get my packs ready in case I get the call.

Have you asked him to renew his life insurance? Load his papers into the dishwasher?
Maybe its just that my in-laws aren't used to it, but if they are doing something pants-on-head stupid, I turn into a donkey cave until they take a moment and think as to why I'm suddenly being so callous. Then they sometimes figure it out, and do the proper thing.

Actually though, the dishwasher is a solid piece of advice. It's watertight, and usually screwed into the cabinets. Great way to protect valuables from water.
