G'day everyone! Welcome to my painting and modelling blog. I've got a number of projects under way at the moment. First and foremost of these is a Space Marine army from the Ultramarines Chapter, 1st and 2nd Company. I’ve also got a smaller force of Astra Militarum Vostroyan Firstborns and a slightly larger force of Sister of Battle from the Order of Our Martyred Lady in the works. Along with this I'm slowly building up a collection of terrain, mostly old Forge World city fight stuff. I've been slowly working away at all of this and thought this blog might be a good way to keep myself motivated as well as document my progress.

This is going to be a slow process but having this list will hopefully keep me on track! Most the models I've already got aside from some vehicles.

Hey everyone! This is the start of my painting and modelling blog, hopefully some of y'all will stick along for the ride!

I've been crawling along at an absolute snails pace but I'll put up some photos of what I've managed to paint up over the last year. I'm using a pretty janky setup for photographing my minis so hopefully my photos will get better over time!

First up we've got a squad of Terminators led by their kind old captain. They're built from the standard Terminator box set with FW shoulder pads. The laurel wreath hung up on the back banner is from an old Empire set I think, can't quite remember which one. The wreath is a reappearing theme throughout my Ultramarines, inspired by an old army from White Dwarf back around the Eye of Terror campaign. The banner is unfinished, as you probably figured out from the blank disc in the centre!

To accompany them is a Venerable Dreadnought. The model is the Ultramarines Venerable Dreadnought from FW. Arms are magnetised and the back banner is removable. Such a bummer that they stopped producing this model along with the whole MKIV Dreadnought line

So there you go, the first entry in what will hopefully be a long a fruitful hobby blog!
Until next time

Hey Zahnib. Great to see you've started up a blog. (even if it is ultramarines! )

Good pre-amble. Looks like you've got a fair bit to get through. I think i'll enjoy seeing your progress along the way.

Terminators look great. I like the posing on the sarge. With the angled bolter and cocked head, it looks like he's about to put the kill-shot on something.
You're not wrong about the dreadnoughts though. The chapter specific ones were really nice and it's a shame they've stopped producing them. Your's looks killer though.

One thing that caught me quite quickly was the bases. How do you do them? It's a look I wouldn't mind emulating on my own city-themed bases.

A very clean and well presented start! I like the termies as well. Your paint style is sharp. Have you simply not gotten around to the termie banner yet or are you in the midst of planning a specific design? I'm eager to see what you end up putting in there.

The iconography on the ven dread's banner is likewise really tidy and shows your sharp hand for fine detail work. I second your feeling about that miniature as well. It was never one I got around to buying because of expensive shipping costs - now it seems as though i'll have to fork out much more if I ever do eventually end up getting it

In any event, glad to see you've started up a blog! I'm following with much anticipation and have really enjoyed what I've seen so far

@Snrub Haha, yes well it won't be just Ultramarines! Hopefully the odd spattering of Sisters and Vostroyans will keep you satisfied Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! I was pretty happy with the posing of the Terminator Sergeant myself.
The bases I'm actually considering re-doing as the scale of the material is a bit off I feel. I use the old Citadel Urban Basing Kit. It had a tub of fine slate and another with some larger pieces, as well as barbed wire and some resin cast pieces. Unfortunately they've been out of production for quite some time but I'm sure you could find something similar in terms of materials. I just use Codex Grey over a Chaos Black undercoat with White Scar as a highlight on the rocks and pieces of paving.

@lipdapips Thanks! For the terminator sergeant’s banner I don’t have anything too fancy planned, just a transfer, just haven't gotten around to applying it. Thanks for the feedback! I was real happy with how the Dread’s banner turned out, was a bit dubious about it at first what with the Tyranid warrior slung up there but it was really fun to paint. Yeah such a bummer, its a great model and eBay is swarming with recasts. But who knows, maybe they'll bring it back

Ah bugger. Those basing kits look heaps good. Shame they quit making them.
Don't suppose you have any unused resin detail bits you could take some pictures of for me? For inspirational purposes...
I'd be keen for a few close up shots.

A quick update. I'm currently waiting on some basing material to arrive so I can rebase my models. I've got most of my Sisters of Battle and Vostroyan Firstborns assembled and primed but their bases need redoing before I start painting them up I do have three sisters painted up though, just trying to get the colour scheme down. The icon bearer is missing her backpack, I'll need to rummage around in my bits box and find it.

Really nice work there, zahnib, both on the Sisters and the Ultramarines.

Will you be going for the studio Vostroyan scheme, or coming up with one of your own?

Looking good Zahnib.

Only minor criticism I can offer is that the metal on the boltguns looks... patchy (?) in places. Maybe another coat of metal and black wash or something might help.

@Dysartes Thanks! I'm planning on keeping the Vostroyans pretty close to the studio scheme. I haven't done any test models yet though so may do some slight alterations.

@Snrub yes! I totally agree. I need to repaint their bolters. The highlights are very messy

Another update. Dreadnoughts! For my Ultramarine force I plan on only using MKIV dreadnoughts. I really like the design and have been lucky enough to pick a few up over the past couple of years. So far I've got two painted up with another having arrived in the mail just a few weeks ago. For weapons I'm a bit limited at the moment: 5 Close Combat arms, 1 Plasma Cannon and 1 Assault Cannon. Hopefully I'll be able to scrounge around the interwebs and pick some more up. My two painted dreadnoughts have magnetised arms, my newest acquisition will require some work to get magnetised...

My photography set up is still very low budget so excuse the shoddy photos, they give the model an odd gloss that isn't present in real life.

My second venerable MKIV dread in all its need-to-strip glory. This arrived a few weeks ago. It included both and Assault Cannon and the FW base which made it quite the find. Unfortunately the arms are glued in place but I'm hoping I can fix that with a soak in Detol.

Along with stripping the dread I'm going to be stripping most of my Sisters of Battle so I can re-prime them. Once this is done hopefully I can get cracking on them!

Until next time

Ah more dreadnoughts. Most excellent.
I have a real soft spot for the humble Castaferrum Boxnaught. Easily my favourite space marine model. Your's look excellent.
Just a crying shame FW stopped producing them.

@Snrub Yeah I totally agree. I've got fond memories of the old 2nd ed. metal dreadnought, the boxier design is very iconic I feel. Whilst the newer (older?) design of the Contemptors makes more sense in terms of a practical machine, they don't have the same old school charm.

@youwashock Thanks! I'm a big fan of old school 40k. I was considering doing my Ultramarines in a retro theme with yellow shoulder trim and red gun casing. Maybe one day I'll swap over.

After a long soak in Detol my latest (and final) MKIV Dreadnought is looking squeaky clean and ready for priming! Unfortunately the Detol was not successful in weakening the glue bonding the arms to the main body. I ended up breaking them off but luckily the joint snapped cleanly. I did have to bore out the joint in the weapon arms so I could inset the magnets but this wasn't too tricky.

Ho boy!!! Well after some heady days filled with the smell of Detol and methylated spirits I have finally stripped all of my Sisters of Battle (excluding the three shown above). My fingers decided it was all too much and shed a layer of skin, so now with my fresh new prints I'm ready to go!

Not a bad paint job by the previous owner, but I want to do my own!

Bath time!

Squeaky clean!

Paint stripping is already pretty well covered here on Dakka as well as the wider web, but on the off chance that someone finds this useful here's my process:
I use both Detol (the brown liquid disinfectant) and methylated spirits. Both have pretty rough fumes that can cause a headache so make sure you're working in a well ventilated area. Both of these liquids will dry your hands our something shocking so make sure you use gloves, otherwise your skin will peal off after a few days (gross). The Detol will eat through gloves (especially if you're cleaning metal minis) after a while so keep an on eye on them. Both liquids will affect glues as well as Green Stuff.

Stage 1: Detol
- Step 1. Fill a jar or container with Detol, then place the miniatures you want to strip inside, making sure they are full submerged.
- Step 2. Leave the miniatures to soak. Soaking times will depend on the type of paint used and the number of layers. I usually give a bit of a test scrub after 15 minutes to see how they're coming along. Generally I'll leave them soaking for a couple of hours. With metal miniatures you can leave them soaking overnight, plastics and resins though I'd be careful. Now I'm no expert and I don't understand the science behind it so resins and plastics might be fine to leave just like metals, I just like to err on the side of caution - it would be terrible to have your lovely FW model turn to sludge
- Step 3. Give them a good scrub with an old toothbrush. The paint should come off easily. If it doesn't, leave them to soak for a bit longer. When scrubbing the miniatures swirl them around in the Detol after giving them a scrub to get any loose paint off.
- Step 4. Once your miniatures are looking nice and clean give them a blast under the tap with hot water, then scrub them thoroughly with dish soap and hot water (use a different tooth brush). This stage is important. Detol + paint + water = a bad time, mixing Detol and water will cause paint to become sticky and weird. By blasting the stripped miniature under the hot tap most of the loose paint will be washed off before the Detol/water mix makes it sticky. Soap also helps stop this sticky process from happening.
- Step 5. Once the miniature has been well scrubbed with the soapy hot water, give it a rinse and allow it to dry. You might have some paint left over in the nooks and crannies, you can try scraping this out with a needle or something similar.

This next stag is potentially not necessary, I do it to get rid of the smell of Detol and any potential residue from the miniatures.
Stage 2: Methylated Spirits
- Step 6. After the stripped miniatures are dry from Stage 1, fill a jar or container with methylated spirits and place the miniatures inside, once again making sure they are fully submerged.
- Step 7. Like before, leave them to soak. Similarly, metals seem to be fine soaking indefinitely, but plastics and resins shouldn't be left for too long. In my experience methylated spirits can cause both to become slightly soft if left for too long.
- Step 8. Give the miniatures a rinse and a scrub with hot soapy water. Methylated spirits are much easier to work with as they don't have any beef with water.
- Step 9. Give the miniatures a final rinse to get any soap off and leave them out to dry!
- Step 10. You're done! Now you can re-prime your miniatures and give them a new life.

Hopefully that'll be of some help to someone, let me know if y'all have any questions

Until next time

Hellooooo, well blimey its been a while! Sorry about that

Not a huge update today, I've slowly been working away at rebasing my models and have just finished undercoating a bunch of Sisters of Battle that I stripped (see post above). My three armies are based with an urban city-fight theme in mind. Originally I had used a combination of fine slate from one of GW's old urban basing kits, however the scale of the slate material was a little off. After hunting around I finally settled on Woodland Scenics' coarse cinder ballast. It comes in various sizes and was just what I was looking for! A while back I also picked up two packs of human skulls from Wargame Exclusive. These are really nice resin casts and as an added bonus the sprues they come on are modelled as i-beams; great little details to add to an urban base! Very nice touch

I used a combination of fine, medium and large ballast to give a bit of variety. Skulls were sprinkled throughout and various larger pieces of slate and razor wire were used as well. Super glue was used to attach the bigger objects like the skulls and large pieces of slate, then Citadel PVA was used to attach the various grades of ballast starting with the largest. Two coats of watered down PVA were then used to seal the bases before undercoating.

Three of my Inquisitorial Storm Troopers with their new bases

So, with my rebasing effort well under way hopefully I'll be able to get around to doing some paining soon!
I hope everyone has had a nice holiday season
Until next time

Hello again! As you can tell my hobby progress has been oh so slow. I've been moving over the past two months so no time for painting unfortunately. However my impending move hasn't stopped me from ordering in some supplies and from doing the odd bit of hobby prep.
As mentioned previously my three 40k armies are based with a city-fight theme in mind. This was originally inspired by some old White Dwarf battle reports back around the Eye of Terror global campaign. I'm a massive fan of the old Forge World City Fight terrain and over the past six or seven years have been slowly hunting down all the pieces I can find. I was lucky enough to find and purchase one of my favourite pieces: the ruined Administratum Entrance, along with a whole bunch of ruined wall sections a few years ago from a chap in Canada. It had been painted in a rather hastily manner by its previous owner so I began the process of stripping the terrain (see my post above for the method) in preparation for a fresh coat of primer.

My Forge World Ruined Administratum Entrance getting a metho bath

Administratum bits drying out

The aforementioned care package arrived from Forge World packed with Ultramarines-goodness. Chapter specific Rhino doors and front plates, extra armour for my Rhinos and Immolators as well as my Land Raider. There was also a dozer blade for one of my Rhinos and some extra close combat arms for my MKIV Dreadnoughts (okay this was ordered quite some time ago!!). The extra armour will require quite a bit of work as the edges were quite as sharp as an older set I have. I emailed Forge World about it and they kindly sent out replacement sets. Absolute legends!

I'm looking forward to finally settling into my new place and having the time to do some painting!
Until next time

I'm back! My hobby progress was stalled for most of the year due to other time commitments but I've finally gotten back into the groove!

Over the past week I've slowly been working away at my Sisters of Battle, the first of which is below! Looking back I think my previous three sisters are in need of a repaint but I've still got a few squads primed and ready to go so they'll be the first priority. Photos are a wee bit nicer quality as well, let me know what you think!

No unfortunately not yet! Most of that the Forgeworld goodies are for my Ultramarines but they’ve been put onto the back burner for a while. The Forgeworld terrain is another story though! I’ve been trying to do some research on good techniques for painting weathered buildings. It’s a bit of a daunting task!

Hopefully I’ll have some more updates with my Sisters of Battle soon though!

Slowly but surely the sisters are coming along. I've got six on the go currently, trying out some batch painting to see if that increases my efficiency, however, I'm not sure if it's made me any faster. Oh well. The red garments are currently taking a loooong time as is the edge highlighting on the armour, but once that's done I think they'll be finished up pretty quick.

I'm pretty happy with the new basing material so far. It is scaled much more appropriately to the models themselves. I'm thinking I might start on some of my Vostroyans to give myself a bit of variety, but we'll see.

I hope you all had a nice festive season.
