Hi all! I'm looking for a desk lamp to improve my painting as my new student halls room has only dim, yellow ceiling light panels, and its not great for painting or mini-photography. I'm looking to invest in a cheap desk lamp and daylight bulb to bump my set up that bit extra. If anyone could recommend me one I'd be really grateful.

I'm looking for

Total Cost Under £30
Easily accessible in UK, ie, Amazon or Ikea
Fits Daylight bulbs available from Amazon
Adjustable and able to be directed where I need it

Thanks in advance!

Look for any lamp that can handle 150watt, it usually has a heat resistant fiber glass over the bulb. Under your price range might be tough.

Search Amazon for Tao Tronics desk lamps. I have a slightly older model, but it has differ t dim settings and is ideal for miniatures painting and low heat.

I have one of these:

But I'm also getting one of these to add more close up light:

Which I've used before, having both is useful, try getting the big one first if you're on a budget though.

I've been using one of the Taotronics lamps for a while, it's pretty good and versatile, but I really fancied getting things a bit brighter. So when I moved house and got a bigger hobby space I bought myself a cheap E27 fitting desk lamp and one of these bulbs - Hiralite 14W 5000K CRI94. What drew me to it was the daylight temperature and the high CRI value. That's the colour rendering index, and the higher it is the better (up to a max of 100). The higher that value, the more faithfully the colours are reproduced which is obviously of benefit for model painting. A lot of lamps don't even quote a CRI value, and most typical LED light setups are somewhere in the CRI80 range. Which is pretty good, but it's not perfect for colour reproduction. I've also just noticed that there's a slightly cheaper version from the same company that's not quite so bright but has CRI95 - even better. There's always room on my desk for another lamp!

A bulb like that and any cheap desk lamp with an E27 fitting should do the job nicely.

But I don't blame you if you think that looks too pricy for just one bulb, and most LED setups should be fine. This is the lamp that I was using for the best part of the last 18 months, for example, and it did the job admirably well.

I have s shelf above my work desk so I fitted one of these

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/lighting/integrated-lighting/omlopp-led-worktop-lighting-white-art-10245224/

And I also have a strip led lamp to one side and a cheap led spot on the other. It just about gets the job done.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I use this one for all my craft needs, and love it.

It's LED rather than a bulb, and it's a bit above your price range - but I got mine for about £40 when hobbycraft had a sale on after christmas a couple of years ago (I recommend signing up for their newsletter as they have some good offers occasionally). It's super adjustable, and I find it more useful than just a desk lamp as it means I can sit on my sofa if I want and still be able to use it, plus the magnifying part is so useful. Also, I've been using it regularly for nearly 2 years now and so far it's not broken or needed anything replacing (although I made a cover for the head to protect it when not in use, which I think has helped keep the magnifier nice).

Thanks a lot for all the replies folks! I've had a look at all the links suggested. I'm still waiting for a week to get one next weekend when it hits payday but there are a lot of good suggestions here!

I do really appreciate the help. My new bedroom has poor natural light as it is, and moving into the Scottish winter its only going to get worse. A dim ceiling light behind me only serves to hurt my back and eyes when painting these days so a desk lamp is a priority purchase right now.

I just use one of these and put a solid LED daylight bulb in it. The adjustability is very convenient.

I have one of these on each side of my desk and swivel as needed and yes, with an LED daylight bulb.
The fun bit is it generates little heat so you can get pretty close without getting burnt.
I sometimes lean back to paint and have the lights reach out, it is a more humane way of painting.

At my desk

Ikea Tertial is a good one. Nice white lightbulbs are available too, affordable, and has a clamp option so it doesn't take up desk space.

Get two if you can.

Those are all nice. As long as the neck is posable you should be fine. Get yourself a nice magnifier visor to help out your painting quality even more.

Those lamps tend to get your painting area really hot. Your head is right up in there.
