Hello all! I'm starting to consider giving AoS a shot, after finding a bunch of different models or faction aesthetics to be oh so pleasing. While I'm still piecing together how to actually make an army in AoS, and all the seperate factions inside of grand alliances and all that jazz...

What would be a good place to start? I want to work towards building something involving Archaon and a solid chunk of Varanguard, backed up by chaff and whatnot. My initial research has left me feeling that diving right in with Archaon and Varanguard would be less than ideal. My local community tends to play at 1,000 or 1,500 points. Bit too high of costs points wise to start there.

So rather than start with the big man himself and his best buds, what are some suggestions of a basic Chaos force to begin with, that would be easy to expand off and all that? Start Collecting Slaves of Darkness seems good? What about other things, like beastmen, daemons, or god-specific things?

For reference, my war gaming background is primarily in 40k. I play to a semi-competitive level. I'll go to local tournaments, place high to middle of the pack. Love winning, but it's not the be all end all for me. Looking to build something that's not a wet noodle. I've primarily played shooting armies in 40k, and tend to go more on the Elite side of things, with low model counts. Shaking things up in a completely new game is another thing in mind for me.

Sorry I can't really help game wise, I don't know how to really play. For collecting though how does the Start Collecting set for your army look?

Also do you have the Age of Sigmar app? That has the rules in there and it's free. Also it will give you ALL the stats for all the minis. So I would start there if you haven't so.

Also if looking for points, not sure if you will need the General's Handbook 2018 to get updated points for your army. I think you do, but don't want to say since I could be wrong. I believe if you don't go that way, I think that is what tells you how to make an army you can get the points for free when making an army on the GW Community site I think to make a roster and get points for it.

So lots of things can be done for free. But you will need to get your Battletomb (codex) for your army and maybe GH2018 for updated points or on the website as I said before.

Hope this helps.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?
