I am starting to rebuild and run my Eldar in 8th and just want to make sure I have interpreted this correctly. The Appear Unbidden rule for Eldar Rangers says "At the start of the first battle round but before the first turn begins..." Does the start of the first battle round mean this placement takes place AFTER who gets the first turn is decided? To me you cannot get to the start of the first battle round without this, or is that determination the first thing you do IN the first battle round? I have just been through the Matched play rules and did not find a consensus as to when that determination happens. My group has always done that roll-off (or whatever) before the first battle round, which starts with the player going first starting his turn. Where are we on this?

Obviously, the placement of small squads of rangers could change depending on who goes first.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

Yes, it happens after who gets the first turn is decided. This is also true for the Alpha Legion/Raven Guard Stratagems that do the same thing.

Thanks BCB. This is how my group has been running it. I do wish GW would hire an overall editor who checks for continuity among rules with different names but the same exact game mechanic. This "each codex written by someone else who doesn't check how others wrote the same rule down (some of these clearly say this happens after the first turn is decided...)" has grown old and frustrating.

Giving the same rule in different Codexes different names was actually an intentional move.

The reasoning is if they need to make a change because the rule is too powerful for one specific unit, they can change that version of the rule without affecting every other unit.

Which kind of makes sense, but it causes a whole set of other problems too!
