Just picked up my preorder Beasts of Chaos army book and SC! Box.

Very excited to get assembling and playing, but I have a few questions about what to do with my new models.

Ungors. Give them bows or melee weapons? I want to do the thing where I bring half my army in on the board edge, so which is a better choice?

The big War Cow. Make a Cygor or the Ghorgon?

Also, how do I progress from here? What are some good units to complement the SC! Box? I was thinking a unit of Gors would be good and bring those Ungors up in numbers to get their bonus, but I am new to Beastmen so I have no idea what's good and what isn't.

Also, Path to Glory campaign looks freaking amazing! How many other people are pumped to try this?

Edit:. After reading the book a bit and having a good look at the sprues... Wow, holy crap. If anyone is wondering about Beasts of Chaos, I say pull the trigger.

The book. First off I don't know much about the game and how it works now. I did play 1st a bit but not enough to talk much about how the units work. So I'll just tell you how good the book is from a new player perspective. So the layout is really nice and there is a large chunk of text at the beginning that I'm looking forward to reading. There is plenty to read for only 104 pages! There does however seem to be a trend developing with GW now though... There is an awful lot of Brayherds braying through their brayhorns whilst herded about their Herdstone. So from here on in I'm calling them War Cows #YourDudes. Aside from that there is some keen artwork in here as well. I really love the cover art but what really sets the book off is all the little filler bits like the Chaos God symbols Brayherd, erm, War Cow style. The warscrolls are really simply done and very boldly printed for easy reading at the game table and for photocopying to make cards. I like that each scroll has a picture of the actual model too, that's a nice touch. And finally, there is a really wicked painting guide that is really quite extensive.

Now, the models. I'm sure you've all seen them before but this is my first gander at Beastmen models IRL. The Cygor/Ghorgon model? Holy crap. I've never really had a large centrepiece model like this before, even in my 40k collection. Maybe that's a byproduct of trying to build decently competitive lists? Or maybe cuz I used to be broke all the time, I dunno. But I'm looking at this thing and it's huge. This model will easily be the biggest painting challenge I've faced yet and I am looking forward to sharing that here. So keep an eye out dakka! I may even plog the whole SC! Box, because you know what? These models are really really cool. I wish I had started Beastmen when I first wanted to because now I feel like a dope. I could have had a huge herd of War Cows by now!

Looks like finishing off my World Eaters will have to wait. Good thing they're all painted... Mostly.

Okay well after having a read...

Darkwalkers all the way. Their Greatfray ability is to treat Warherd and Thunderscorn as Brayherd for the Brayherd Ambush rule. Funny this morning I was looking at my finished Ghorgon and thinking about a colour scheme. I've decided to do all my dudes in schemes based on different cattle breeds and I can't recall the name of it but there is a breed of bull that has a deep blue skin with a black overcoat and that's how I want to do the Ghorgon. Oddly enough that's the colour scheme of the Darkwalkers. I had heard about the Ambush rule but now that I understand how it's going to work with the DW ability, and the paint scheme, I'd say I've figured out how to go about building my War Cows.

From an army building standpoint I think the easiest thing to do is build around the Desolating Warherd scroll as the required units pair up nicely with what you get in the SC! box. I think I only need a Beastlord or a Doombull and another unit of Ungors.

I'm going to mess around with a different phone to see if I can snap some not blurry shots of the Ghorgon.

On average I do think Ungor Raiders(Ungors with bows) are better than you standard Ungor, but if you need to fill out some battleline you may want to take a small cheep unit to grab some uncontested objective or to sacrifice to the Herdstone.

As for Ghorgon or Cygor, if your just looking for raw damage output I would go with the Ghorgon. The Ghorgon is pretty strait forward, if you want an enemy gone send a Ghorgon into it. That said, the Ghorgon can do a lot of damage but it doesn't have many attack, this make its combats very swingy. One round it might single wipe an entire enemy unit off the map by itself and the next it might do no damage at all. Additional attack, + 1 to hit/wound, rerolls, additional rend; all these thing can really help the Ghorgon land those blows.

However, if you only have one wizard in your army and no other way to unbind enemy spells I would recommend taking the Cygor. Please note that the Cygor is not very good at melee, it is best kept back to throw its rock. That's not to say you should never assault it into melee; other week combat unit, heavily damaged units, or just to saturate the enemy with additional target, are all possible reason to attack with the Cygor.

To those that say there is no stupid questions I say, "Is this a stupid question?"

Hey thanks for the reply! The cygor is definitely good at helping out with spell countering but after reading the entry about the Ghorgon eating things I was sold.

Here is what I did with him.

Got a better camera phone to use now so I'll be posting a lot of pics soon!

I realize he is supposed to have blade hands but... I didn't like them. I might GS some blades onto those brass knuckles he's sporting.

Keyboard on the other phone sucks.

So I agree about Ungors. It's probably best to have at least 1 small unit of them, if only just to be a Herdstone sacrifice and or a summoning unit. I think the Ungor Raiders are probably best suited to ambushing things and being chaff.

Here is how I sort of envision the army working. First off, I think it's important to ambush the right beasts. Trying to pull off 9" charges from a board edge sounds too risky. I think you need to be making your big charges around turn 2 or 3 with Gors and Bestigors who are getting bonuses from a decently charged Herdstone. So Ungor Raiders in large numbers to ambush, they just seem like more effective screeners. The main force, Bestigors, probably Gors and then the Ghorgon and Shaman. I like the idea of a Doombull General even though he only buffs Warherd, nothing stopping me from taking them. But what I think will be really key is using the DW Command Ability to catapult units behind the enemy line. The only trouble I see is leaving yourself weak for that one turn while your unit pulls an ambush and that's why I'm thinking some Bullgors would make a nice addition.

On the other hand, half the reason why DW is so good is because it allows you to ambush with Warherd and Thunderscorn, so perhaps a mixed herd is best since then I can choose who to ambush based on the opponent. At any rate I think a solid number of Raiders should be the core of the army. It's the only ranged option unless you want to look at Tzaangors but I think they would be best done as their own army.

Well I got some more dudes glued together. I did all the command squads, do people still call them that? The banner bearer, musician and leader, for the Ungor and Bestigors squads. They look pretty spiffy but I did have to do the penny under the base trick for the Ungor dudes. They were just a lil wobbly. The Bestigors held up fine though, they're a much larger model and I suspect the 32mm bases help a lot too.

Oh and I did the Brayshaman as well. Now only a few more models in each squad and I'll be ready to prime after a little cleanup. Wet season here now though and not any well ventilated areas where I can spray bomb indoors so they will have to be brush coated. But, I'm okay with that. You always seem to need to touch up spray jobs anyways so really what is the bother?

I might post some pics of the herd tomorrow, but that depends on how much I feel like mucking about with my camera phone after work.

Also, I think there will be a new painting challenge up soon and I might try to shoehorn a new model in there. If I do I'll need a proof picture of a model so I might just wait.

I am thinking that Darkwalker Cygors will be good, as they can come in from any board edge to throw their rocks, which aren't super long range, and it lets them avoid being shot first turn if needed. They could easily take on a less killy backfield enemy.

My Brass Despoiler Bullgors/Doombull are Malice themed, with black and white tribal paint on their heads over a generic beasty brown/ungor flesh bodies.

I'd vote for the Ungors with bows n arrows. Let the Gors and Bestigors do the chopping
