Can nid's have allies now? I have not been in 8th edition for a while.

But the new FAQ has this: "BATTLE BROTHERS
All of the units in each Detachment in your Battle-forged army must have at least one Faction keyword in common. In addition, this keyword
cannot be Chaos, Imperium, Aeldari, Ynnari or Tyranids, unless the Detachment in question is a Fortification Network. This has no
effect on your Army Faction. "

I started collecting some gs cultists this summer but I have not played since. Can I stil combine them?

You can, but you have to have them in separate detachments.

Legal: A Battalion of Kronos Tyranids and a Batallion of Brood Brothers GSC.

Not Legal: A Brigade of Kronos Tyranids and Brood Brothers GSC.

So each Detachment in a battle-forged army must share a faction keyword, and it cannot be one of those listed in the Battle Brothers rule. An army as a whole (in a battle-forged army) must also have a faction keyword in common, but this is not limited by the Battle Brothers rule.

As an example, you can have an army made up of a detachment of Tyranids using a <HIVE FLEET> keyword, and a Cult detachment using a <GENESTEALER CULTS> keyword (disclaimer: I haven’t looked up the exact version of those keywords, hopefully you’ll get the gist). The whole army is bound together as they have the TYRANID Sfaction keyword, but the invidiual detachments use a different keyword because the BB rule disqualifies TYRANIDS.
