Kobo has given me the best performance by far, but it uses up a fair bit of internal storage and this doesn't seem to be avoidable.

I actually gave up and learned to convert them to PDF for my own personal use.

It's literally easier to extract the ePub into raw xhtml files and load them up individually than using ePubs.
