Howdy everyone,

So its been a long time coming... but my friend Myelz (whom I played against his tyranids for my second game here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/749954.page ) is finally getting his rematch, and its a doozy! After army swapping multiple times, he landed on Knights and hasn't looked back. I don't know if its the extremely strong nature of the codex or what, he loves his giant robots. This is a perfect time to use my new Knight that I just purchased; while I know my list may not be optimal to face something like this, it'll be good practice using a new list! Heres the lists:

Mission and Deployment
We rolled up the mission, getting ITC mission 2 (one obj in the middle, one in each deployment zone). I won the roll off and got Dawn of War, Myelz deploying first. Myelz won the roll for first, and I failed to seize.

For secondaries, Myelz (Knights) took: Big Game Hunter, Behind Enemy Lines, and Kingslayer. I (Nurgle) took: Titanslayer, Old School, and Recon.

Heres what the table looked like:





Knights Turn 1
Spoiler:

Myelz starts his turn as expected; he advances his left knight up the side, aiming for my Knight. His middle Gallant walks up, while everything e;se stays stationary.

Shooting sees the Castellan knock one PBC to 2 wounds, and a second to 5 wounds thanks to some decent rolls on my end (his volcano cannon did like 17 wounds to one PBC... the one with 2 wounds left). Myelz also plucks 1 nurgling base from one unit, 2 from a second, and one from a third.

In assault, on my left Myelz uses Full tilt, but after measuring really quick, he needs a 12 to get my knight. So he targets the Nurglings there, and I use Warp Surge. The knight kicks two more bases to death, and leaves a third base at 2 wounds. I pass morale.




The Knights assault was blunted, mostly because of my DR saves.... honestly I got pretty lucky one of those PBC's survived. However, I'll take what I can. Because Myelz didn't finish off anything, he only scored 1 point this turn for holding his objective. Score is Knights 1 - Nurgle 0



Nurgle Turn 1

Well, I expected to be in much worse shape, but this means I might have a chance! I fall back my engaged nurglings, making a screen in front of where one of my PBC's can move to. My left PBC (with 2 wounds) moves behind them after advancing, my middle PBC moves up toward the middle gallant, and my right PBC moves up 9". My knight swings behind my lines, creating some space in case things go south. Both Blightspawns advance, as do the poxbringers, and my Demon Prince moves into the middle of my PBC triangle. My right nurglings move up to charge the Rangers, and my middle nurglings keep up their screen to prevent the Gallant from being able to charge through.

Psychic phase sees me smite one wound off the left gallant, and shriveling pox go up on him as well. My last poxbringers too far out.

Shooting things get... interesting. Shriveling pox making the Gallant T7 is a huge boon, and I unload on him; the Armigers account for 9 wounds, my PBC rolls well getting 10 shots doing another 6, and my Blightspawn finishes it off rolling 6 shots at str 9 (arch contaminator rerolling all). This causes him to go down, but doesn't explode. This leaves my knight and other PBC's to target the middle Gallant, but he rolls well for saves and it goes to 17 wounds.

Assault my right Nurglings reach the rangers, pulling only 1 down despite 16 attacks :/



Well, that turn went pretty damn well! I was able to kill my primary target, with firepower left to spare. This list is deceptive because, while many of my weapons have varying output, they can really pew stuff down. Anyways, Nurgle is able to kill something, and hold two objectives. So I score 4 primary points (I killed more and held more), 1 Big Game Hunter, and 3 Titanslayer. I'm also able to secure recon. Score is Knights 1 - Nurgle 9



Knights Turn 2
Spoiler:

Myelz is pretty surprised I was able to put down a Gallant so easily, but hes only getting started. Because on my right I left a hole, the Gallant on that side has free reign to go where he wants. It advances, getting a pretty decent roll. The middle Gallant still has no good holes to go through, so just shuffles up a bit. The Castellan moves up slightly, and his left rangers advance up a bit, trying to come around the middle tower and take that objective in the middle.

Shooting sees Myelz finish the middle PBC, and do 5 damage to one Armiger. He only manages to sneak 1 wound onto the 2 wound PBC, leaving it at 1. He also knicks the unwounded PBC to 7. He also plinks 1 more base from each set of nurglings. A big key point to take from this is that Myelz was able to only Raven strat once so far; he used rotate shields, and a bunch of other stuff, and hes down to like 5 CP by this point; had he Ravened he may have picked up more units, but hes thinking defensively especially because he knows he can't plow through everything I have this turn.

Assault he Full Tilts again, and is able to assault my 7 wound PBC. He punches it to death with a Paragon gauntlet, and throws the PBC at my Blessing Poxbringer only doing 1 wound.

This turn was much kinder to Myelz. He scores 1 for killing, 1 for holding. He also gets 2 BGH points. Knights 5 - Nurgle 9



Nurgle Turn 2
Spoiler:

So I have two mostly full Gallants in my grill... this will get sticky. My remaining PBC stays still. My middle nurglings move back, the last 2 bases hanging on the objective in the middle. My forward nurglings on the right walk around the plateau there. My Knight moves up to the right, getting easily within charge range of the Gallant there. Both poxbringers advance, as do the Blightspawns. My demon prince moves up 12" as well.

Psychic phase sees me cast Virulent Blessing and Blades on my demon prince, and throw Shriveling pox on the right Gallant whom is at full wounds.

Shooting I'm able to get the middle gallant to 10 wounds, and the right Gallant to 7 wounds (both Spawns shot the middle one, Armigers and Knight shot the right one).

Onto assault! My Demon prince charges the middle Gallant, while my Knight charges the right Gallant. The Castellan Heroically Intervenes to help out. However, it is all for naught, my Demon prince (buffed with +2 to wound) is able to generate 3 more attacks, and the resulting wounds sees me do 4 double damage attacks, and 2 normal; which scraps the middle Gallant. On the right, my Knight is able to kick the Gallant to death, thanks to wounding on 3's now. However, Myelz isn't going down easily, and he pops the strat to blow on a 4+; which he rolls. The 10" explosion is a doozy; he kills BOTH Poxbringers despite getting 4 wounds on each, I failed all DR rolls. He does 1 wound to a blightspawn, 2 wounds to my Knight, 1 wound to one Armiger, and 2 wounds to a second. I pass my DR rolls on my PBC, leaving it still at 1 wound. Yeash :(






I'm able to score my final Titanslayer point, and one more recon. I killed and held something. I still hold more, but Myelz killed more thanks to his epic explosion. Score is Knights 6 - Nurgle 14.



Knights Turn 3
Spoiler:

Myelz has lost a large chunk of his army, but hes got his main piece left. The Castellan shuffles back a little bit. The rangers continue advancing around the tower. Everything else focuses on rapid fire.

Shooting Myelz splits the Castellans firepower; Siegecannons into the PBC, Meltas and Siegebreaker into my Demon prince, Cawls into my Armiger, and Volcano Cannon into my knight. He does pretty decently; my demon prince lives, only taking a few wounds and going to 4 (lots of melta misses). The Volcano Cannon takes my Knight to 4 wounds, I rotated Ion but I failed all my saves. Cawls totals my heavily wounded armiger. The siegecannons fail to wound the PBC, it is still hanging on by a thread. The rangers plink a Nurgling base in the middle, and leave me at 2 bases to my right, and one from two squads in the middle.

Myelz chooses not to assault with his Castellan.




Myelz was able to secure a kill, and he still holds his objective. Myelz scores 1 more BGH point. Score is Knights 9 - Nurgle 14.



Nurgle Turn 3
Spoiler:

I might be able to secure this! However, without my Shriveling Pox its gonna be much, much harder.

I move the demon prince up, setting up an assault on his backfield. Nurglings move to support. One Nurgling stays on the middle objective, while my last one from the third squad hides behind the tower. My PBC moves around the tower, aiming to flame the rangers there. My knight walks up slowly, and my armiger moves to the right to retake my objective.

Psychic phase has me smite and do 2 wounds to one of his HQ's in back. Thats it.

Shooting I kill the ranger squad around the side of the tower, thanks to a reroll on number of shots for the PBC. I also do a chunk of wounds, taking the Castellan to 14 wounds; one of my blightspawns rolled str 4 for his shots, but I already used my rerolls :(

Assault sees me get into his backlines, the prince taking 1 wound on his way in. Despite rolling really well, Myelz invun saves are hot, and I kill the ranger squad there down to 2, and take his priest to 1 wound. He swings back for no wounds.






Myelz and I both killed 1 unit, so neither killed more. I hold more. I score 1 for killing, 1 for holding. I'm also able to get 1 recon point, mostly thanks to that middle nurgling base. Score is Knights 9 - Nurgle 18.



Knights Turn 4
Spoiler:

With a tiered knight left, Myelz scoots back a bit. The dominus is still too far out though, so he goes to help versus the prince. For some reason myelz doesn't fall back, but I think he wanted to focus fire on more immediate threats while the prince was amused.

Shooting Myelz is able to kill a blightspawn, and do 2 wounds to my Knight leaving it at 2 (he rolled low on number of shots, and hitting on 4's matters more than you'd think...). He also finally kills my PBC in back. Thats about it.

Assault his Dominus and more rangers come in to help versus the prince, but the prince is left at 2 wounds because I interrupt the assault, killing his priest and killing 2 more rangers, leaving 4 rangers and his dominus. His Castellan assaults my remaining blightspawn, whom rolls really low for strength again :( I used my last CP's so he takes it to the face, dying.



Welp, myelz killed a PBC and two spawns. Not bad! I figured I would have lost the knight, but Knights are a lot less scary when they can't raven every. single. turn. Myelz killed and held an objective. He maxed out BGH finally. Knights 12- Nurgle 18.



Nurgle Turn 4
Spoiler:

I've still got a chance to pull this off, but it relies more on luck at this point; the Castellan, even if its tiered, can wreck havoc on my army. So I move the Knight up a bit more. Thats about all.

Psychic phase I smite, doing 2 wounds to the Dominus.

Shooting I'm able to get the Castellan to 5 wound!!!!!!! ARG!

Assault my Prince kills him down to 2 rangers, and takes no wounds in return.



Knights killed more this turn, while I held more. I'm contesting his obj now. Score is Knights 12 - Nurgle 21



Knights Turn 5
Spoiler:

He falls back from my demon prince, getting the dominus close to the knight. Not much else to do.

Shooting he fails to kill my knight, but he kills the Demon prince finally. he also chunks my Armiger, taking it to only a few wounds. Hitting on 5's



He killed one, but no longer holds any objectives (fell back from my prince with everything, which mean't 2 nurgling bases = 2 rangers). Knights 13 - Nurgle 21.



Nurgle Turn 5
Spoiler:

Not much to do. My remaining nurglings up top set up to assault the rangers there and keep them from the objective. My knight keeps moseying.

Shooting I'm able to take the Castellan to 1 wound!!!!! UGGGGGHHHHGGHGIHOHOHIOHOHO......

Assault I kill the rangers in the back.



I hold more, and we both killed the same. I get the bonus. Score is Knights 13 - Nurgle 25.



Knights Turn 6
Spoiler:


Nothing much to do. The Dominus heals his Castellan, and he sets up to try and finish what he can.

Shooting he fails to kill my 2 wound knight somehow again... mostly because he can't seem to hit anything. He kills the Armiger in back, and wounds some nurglings.

In assault he assaults with the dominus, and he gets lucky passing 2 saves of 3 from the Gatlings overwatch living with 1 wound! The Castellan fails its charge. Hilarity ensues, and the dominus hits once, wounds once, and I fail the save Dominus FTW! The Knight lived much longer than it should have though haha.



Myelz killed, but didn't hold anything. He killed more too Knights 18 - Nurgle 25.



Nurgle Turn 6
Spoiler:

I can't kill anything with the 4 nurgling bases left... so I hunker down.

I hold more and hold stuff. I also get the bonus. I also get linebreaker and forgot to add the 1 old school for first turn kill. Final score is Knights 18 - Nurgle 30.



Post Game Thoughts

Final Score: Knights 18 - Nurgle 30. Knights maxed out Big Game Hunter, scored 3 for Kingslayer, and 0 for Behind enemy lines. Nurgle maxed Titanslayer, scored 3 Recon, and scored 2 Old School.

What a doozy! Seriously a game of skill and luck. I will caveat this that, had it not been Nurgle, I probably would have gotten steamrolled pretty quickly.

However, two big things I think decided this game: 1) Myelz holding the second Gallant back turn 1, and 2) not assaulting all the Nurglings. Had he done that, he would have put a lot more pressure on me, and been in a better position to get into my lines earlier. Because he didn't do that, I was able to position my Nurglings in a way to prevent him from charging any key targets until turn 3; I knew he was going to Full Tilt at least turn 1 and 2, so I played toward expecting that. I will say that I probably made a mistake when I didn't send more into the Castellan when I had a chance; but I felt like the Gallants were a more immediate threat.

Luck was all over the place this game, from me living through a 17 wound Volcano cannon, to Myelz missing stuff on my Knight and Demon prince more than a few times and me making a few key saves (I forgot to mention, the Volcano cannon hit my knight once on turn 5, but I made the 5++). On the other side, Myelz Castellan hanging on with 5 wounds, then 1 wound, was key because if it had fallen, it would have been over earlier. Probably the same the other way! This game made me laugh becaue I told myelz I'm good at hitting stuff, but not wounding. It showed; two turns in a row I hit with my armigers on the Castellan 10+ times, but failed to even roll a single wound. On the flipside, the Gatling cannon hit MORE at a 5+ BS, and did more wounds both of those turns. Don't ask me how that works.

I think we played a solid game, and I really liked how this list played. Nurglings are great at zone control, and volume of fire mean't I was able to reliably wound stuff often even when I wasn't wounding on a 4+. Shriveling pox was key this game, and while some people would say he should have oathbreakered him earlier, you gotta think of it this way; he had 11 CP to start, and between Ion Shields two turns, a few rerolls, Raven strat, two full tilts, and an explode better, he didn't have room to really use it, especially with the very slim margin where he may have killed it.

This may have been a Fluke, or might have not. Only testing this more will tell!

Looking at the lists this is pretty rough for Nurgle, he's got 4 fat knights and your whole army wounds them on 5s and 6s aside from the 2 blightspawns, AND he can repair the knights. Really bad matchup my dude, but good luck

Thanks Buddha, its gonna be really rough. 1k Sons would have probably been a better idea, or running a Skulltaker prince with a horde of letters in reserve... but meh.

Shriveling pox definitely has its place in some lists; and the idea came to me when thinking about how awesome Armigers are, but how they might not do well against Knights... same with Claw princes. Many people choose Miasma or Virulent blessing all the time, ol' shriveling pox I feel is overlooked often.
