Hi All!

Just got into 40k by buying first set of Plague Marines (the Set of 7)

I guess something I was not considering when making the purchase was that there are more weapons included in the set than miniatures.

Ive built 1 with a boltgun, but was wondering what you guys think I should equip the other seven with? Ive heard mixed opinions about making them either all range or all melee.

For further context, I plan on getting the Know No Fear set to supplement my Death Guard.

Well, there are two answers to this.

First, the gameplay answer:
Plague Marines tend to do best when equipped with plasma guns or blight launchers, both types of flamers are a waste of points. Melta are too expensive for what they do - this might change in the future though if you want a playable army ASAP, you should put plasma guns and blight launchers on your marines where possible and bolters on the others.

The economic answer differs vastly:
There are multiple sets of plague marines that are cheaper than your box.
The plague marines from Dark Imperium have one plasma gun, five bolters and one champion with fist and sword. These are very cheap to get from ebay as many people want the primaris marines from the box and sell the death guard.
The Easy-To-Build set (which can also be found in the First Strike) has one champion with a plasma gun, one marine with a blight launcher and one with a bolter.
There is also another set which has two more bolter marines and a melta gun plague marine.
So you can basically get bolter marines and guys with plasma guns or blight launchers really cheap.

The one thing you cannot get outside of your box of plague marines is close combat weapons.
Therefore my advice would be building them with flail of corruption, mace of contagion/axe bubotic axe/sword and dual sword combination. Put special weapons of your choice (avoid the flamers) on the rest.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In general, you should aim to get Dark Imperium at least once for your DG army. Most of the characters are usable, the drone and the pox walkers are great and you get a bunch of plague marines, all for about the same price as your box right now.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

One thing I did that wasn't mentioned above-- was that after using all the components possible in the plague marine box, I sorted through it and organized what I needed to use the rest of the components.

I went on ebay, and other bitz sites, and found plague marine bodies, scrounged up some pauldrons, and some backpacks (mk3 to be specific) and made another bunch of marines.
