Using Inks and Washes

San Francisco, CA

Hi all,

I have some terrain features with one-inch removable, magnetized disks that currently sport 30mm scale trees (single tree, 3-4 inches tall). I'd like to make some custom disks that wouldn't look out of place for a 10mm scale game (I'm currently backing the CAV kickstarter, and want to make some new terrain). I'd like to avoid any messy flocked trees, and ideally would like to base 2-3 trees per 1" disk.

Any recommendations? What are you using for your Adeptus Titanicus games? What do you think would look cool?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Cheers!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

I've seen this tutorial vid floating around, using wavy craft pipe cleaners.

There also wire tree method, only instead of flock you use small tufts of glue-hardened cotton balls (alternatively wirewool or chipfoam).
Or skip the cotton ball and just paint the wire trees dark colors like they've been fire scorched.

Otherwise there are plastic aquarium plants or fake foliage for making wreathes from craft stores that can be cut to size.

There's another technique I've been meaning to experiment with using actual plant clippings preserved with a clear coat spray.

Here's a UK site that does trees in many different hieghts to match most scales:

I'm sure there must be an equivalent store in the US that does this kind of product for architectural models.
Note: N-scale = 1:160 & Z-scale = 1:220.
You can look up on Wiki the average height for mature trees & then buy the right height tree.
EG an English Oak can grow up to 20m high so at 1:160 you would need a 125mm tall model tree (20,000 / 160).
Another note: as an architectural student I quickly learnt that trees are a heck of a lot higher than you would first think!! The smallest tree I would put on a model would be the scale equivalent of 5m high. & that's a small / young tree.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!
