One of the things I have heard mentioned in a few places is that flying is too cheap and is borderline busted. However I heard an update helped patch that up...

So my question as a still-new player is ... is flying still "busted"? Is flying something that if one doesn't have in their force will put them against the ropes from the opening bell?

It is still easier to play with something flying than not. However it is not a big problem, and the better you get, the less important flyers become. The update that helped a lot was that if you put one wound on them in melee, they are grounded for a round (usually to their death).

I run a Varangur list with no flyers, and I do extremely well with the list.

In my League of Rhordia lists however, I use 1-2 cheap flyers that I really donĀ“t want to drop from the list, so the faction / type of list you play will also matter.

By playing no flyers, you get more points for other stuff, so use that advantage to your benefit.

Gotcha thanks for the input. I'm glad to hear that.

They have also introduced Heavy Flyers, which do not get Nimble and the usual automatic boost to Speed 10. So far only new models get this rule, but it is expected to apply to all dragon type big things come 3rd edition.

40k Potica Edition - 40k patch with reactions, suppression and all that good stuff. Feedback thread here.

Gangs of Nu Ork - Necromunda / Gorkamorka expansion supporting all faction. Feedback thread here

Which models do have that rule? I am not aware of any.

Yeah, fliers are ok, I would still not advise using heavy fliers (things like a dragon or a horde of Elohis) in your first games, but it's just that it's easier to learn how to use them that to learn how to counter them, so in games with beginners they can have a disproportionnal impact, but if you just add them later after having learned the bases, they won't be a problem.

Light fliers like gargoyles troops or similar are however not a problem for your first games and are a nice ways to test the fly rule.

And once you and your opponents are familar with the core rules you can start adding your big fliers if you want, no problem.
