Hey all, I understand this may be in the wrong spot but thought it best fit my post. I dropped off of minis after having a stint on bloodbowl a couple years back, which I enjoyed but having dedicated time each week in leagues etc just did not fit with me. However, having recently looked into GW minis just to see what was going on, it peaked my interest! Rookie mistake I know. I have roped a couple buddies into the buying an item per month and no more until is painted scheme. It keeps interest and doesn't overwhelm me with masses of grey plastic! It also works out cheaper which is nice.

So I will get to the part where you guys can lend your vast knowledge! Whats good right now in terms of minis? I've always had a interest in Bolt Action and similar games purely because I am a avid history fan. However, painting these minis does not appeal to me half as much as fantasy and sci fi stuff, although the games itself and the boards are brilliant. In terms of GW products I know they have necromunda and all that jazz out again now, so my question is; what is good currently? Is 40k still dying off and complained about, and AOS which I didnt like originally has some great models, but the gameplay itself is an unknown to me, I am open to other cool models and games considering they are reasonably priced, although I will say super small scale stuff and X-Wing is not something Im interested in, as much as I know people love it, it's just not my thing.

Anyways thankyou for any help guys (If it comes of course!) and hope you all have a lovely evening.

40K is back in a big way and is probably going to be the easiest to find people to play against

If you like GWs minis and want to play smaller scale games Killteam is an option, that uses the same minis (well the basic troops & a few extras)

Or there's a new version of Necromunda

If you liked the actual rules from Bolt Action but want an SF game it would be worth looking at Beyond the Gates of Antares from Warlord Games as the rule set is based on the bolt action one. and a decent amount of the minis are plastic

Great to hear on 40k, I'm guessing huge changes from 8th? Killteam seems fun and probably something we would play at first. Having heard that 40k is back on the up, it has made me lean more that direction. The new factions seems fun too, Deathwatch and Skittari plus the Custodes which seem like golden Grey knights but never seen them played. GW seem to have gone above and beyond with some of the new models they are releasing, the plague marines are crazy, although I was a fan of the older models.

I think 8th is an improvement although others disagree, but the key point is that pretty much everybody (bar GSC and Sisters) has had a codex update for 8th, and most of them are better balanced than before

It's still not going to please those who want absolute balance but I think it's in a better place than before

if you like the deathguard you may want to check out the partworks magazine Warhammer 40,000: Conquest from Hatchette that's just starting out as it's going to deliver a deathguard and primeris marine army over 80 issues

(issue 6 was out on Wed , wh smiths & forbidden planet still seem to be stocking it so even if you don't want to subscribe you can pick up individual issues)

Ahh so no more Eldar shenanigans? I honestly didn't mind seventh, but I didn't play competitively so I escaped the horror of it all.

I'll keep an eye out for that next time I'm around town, thankyou for the heads up! What model did people get free btw.

Frostgrave

Bolt Action is a brilliant game. It's what 40K would have been if the writer (same guy) had the freedom to do so, setting aside.

Not as much fun to paint, sure, but you can get a decent Bolt Action force for the cost of a Land Raider.

What sort of things are you into?

If you want fantasy skirmish, I'd have a look at Frosgrave (classic fantasy, use any minis you want) or Malifaux (fantasy/weird west setting).

Some of the GW self contained games are pretty good too.
