Hey all!

So I've got a cheap 3'x3' folding table, a card table. Since we're in an apartment, and my wife really doesn't want a board out all the time, I'm thinking about making a 4'x4' board to go on top, the connection to the card table isn my worry though.

While I can field 2;000+ based on the army, I feel like since most of my forces are barely 1,000 generally closer to 500 or 750, the 4d4 size should work better.

I'm planning on putting edging onit and getting a nice mat to play on.

I'm also really wanting to make some decent sized terrain, multilevel stuff, lost of catwalks and such but with enough ground space for vehicles and the like.

Anyways, I'm torn on what to do for section for books, dice, dead models, etc. I also wanna find a way to make a multi table setup for bigger games, boards linked by long causeways, etc. I'd even considered making 3 or 4 3x3 boards and lining them via causeways or large boards to really change up the feeling of playing.

Stick a low table underneath. Sorted.

If you don’t have space for a big board you don’t have space for a multiboard. Use what space you have.

It seems you seek the Holy Grail of playing surfaces. Small, but large; terrained, but space to maneouver; pretty, but practical.

If space is a premium, you might want to consider Kill Team as an option.

If you are set on 1k games, be aware that multi-level table ornaments are heavy on storage, or liable to collapse at inconvenient moments.

Using a pre-printed mat may give the way forward. As it shows 3D details in 2D, think about using 3x3 inch wood blocks to build your height, with each block covered in printed paper to match the mat.

In any event, good luck on your Quest.

You might want to think creatively about this.

A friend of mine in Manhattan keeps his table on the ceiling. He lowers it with a pulley for those times he needs it, and the cables are detachable so they don't get in the way.

If you a have a little space in your apartment (like maybe behind a couch or something, against a wall etc) have you thought about a fold out ping pong table (table tennis table). That's what I have (granted in my garage). It is on wheels and when folded up is 5ft long and 2ft wide (4ft high), when folded out the playing surface is 8ftx5ft. Enough space for a 6x4 mat (I use mats from gamemat.eu) and space on the side for dead models, books, dice etc. It folds out pretty big so depends on the space you have. Bonus is you can play ping pong

Get a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Cut it down to 2 2x4 and 1 4x4 sheet. Add hinges so the 2x4 sections can be folded underneath. Acquire sturdy supports the same height as the card table (or adjustable to such) to support the hinged section when you want to use it as a 4x8 table.

Now you've got a 4x4 table that can also be a 4x6 table or 4x8 table.

Not sure what your hardware store situation is in Canada, but the Lowe's and Home Depots in the US will cut lumber for you in the store.

You could always do floor hammer with a roll up mat table.

but really it sounds like you dont have all that much room. best option might be a simple two cheap plastic folding tables and a rolling mat. you could put a foldable cardboard sheet under the mat to keep it stable. all of it can be flat packed into a closet or garage.

if you are handy you could potentially do some crafty wood working to making something like this folding sewing table
you just got to plan it out and make it something like 4x2.5 leafs and a 1 foot middle top. you could put it on wheels and leave it on the wall as a credenza

I really appreciate all the responses.

Ya, very small amount of space, and cash, available.

4x4 is about as big as I can go. I've even considered hinging 2x4 peices, as we have limited storage space.

Terrain wise I'm hoping to make it modular, use dollar store magnets to hold catwalks in place and such.

I'm trying to get everything to flatpack as best I can.

In my early days playing 3rd Ed, we used folding TV trays as deployment areas, linked by boards, long sloped ones to the coffee table, etc. It's drastically different from the way the game is supposed to be played, but it got us playing. Looking back, it made for some amazing tactical choices, and was really fun.

Just buy a 4'x4' folding banquet table and a 4 foot gaming mat. Problem solved.
