I am starting a new narrative-driven
AoS Free Peoples army and I want to catalog my process somewhere, so here we are.
The concept behind the army is that they were a roving band of mercenaries whose general fell in a foul ambush to the Legions of Nagash in the Death-aspected realm of Shyish. Their numbers broken (and the majority of their rank and file slaughtered) the remaining survivors carved out an existence where they could. They wouldn't have made it far if they hadn't almost immediately come across another casualty of war, a roving Kharadron treasure hunter who had coincidentally lost his whole company to a similar ambush by the forces of Death. Not one to pass up an opportunity, and determined to put his prodigious leadership skills to use, this treasure hunter rallied the remaining mercenaries and used his knowledge of technology to not only allow them to survive in the inhospitable environs of Shyish, but to thrive by harnessing the energies flowing through the sorcerous winds of Death.
Soon, the small force was able to re-establish a contract with their fallen comrades to serve on even in death as Freeguild Guard. Bolstering their ranks, they continue to draw on whatever resources they can in Shyish to strengthen their numbers, the treasure hunter slowly building back the stature he lost when all his airships went down and his men perished. Now they roam Shyish as soldiers of fortune once more, dividing their time between seeking ancient magic and technology for profit, and lending aid to other members of their alliance who are beset by the foul hordes of Death.
*EDIT: Actually I think I am going to take this project in an AOS28/Dark Age of Sigmar/Warband/Hinterlands/Skirmish/etc direction.
As for my first warband...it will follow similarly along the lines of what I outlined above, but with space for more unique characters and conversions. I know for a fact I want:
Kharadron Freeguild General Guy
Hardened Battle Priest/Witchfinder Guy
Kharadron Engineer/Big Gunner Guy
3-ish Handgunners
2-3 "Rangers" (Freeguild Archers?)
7-10 "Eternal Guard" (Chainrasp counts-as)
First test model, a Freeguild Handgunner:
