Yes this thread is for true beardiness and beard related discussion and debate and showing off and whatever! For both the bearded and our non-bearded cousins.

There's also a poll where we can see how truly bearded DakkaDakka is!

Myself had one since I could grow one, never liked the harsh feel of shaving! I've also found that its better to have it longer than short, a good few inches is both more striking (!) and comfortable. Those super short beards I've found are all prickles and more itchy, once it grows out a few inches its far more tame and smooth feeling.

Never had a chance to get any longer though one day I shall get at least as far as a Viking beard!

Also are you aware we only have ONE smilie with a bit of beard! A terrible oversight!

During my undergrad years I did have a Viking beard, however due to interview processes I did trim it down to around the Brian Blessed level (had to google that tho).

April 11, 2014 was the last day that I ever shaved my face.

I used to have a medium beard as a young man, mainly to save on shaving costs. It didn't stop me getting married.

Since achieving mature years I have given it up because it grows out white, unfortunately, and makes me look old. This also prevents the designer stubble look, because it looks like old man who hasn't bothered shaving.

I want the Mark Hall-Patton beard which is a step above the Brian Blessed because it has cool badger-wolverine stripes and the roots have fully grown up into the brain imparting a vast knowledge of everything. The beard of knowledge is a slightly shorter version of a wizard beard.

Beard oil gents. Use it. Smells wonderful, keeps our fungus in tip top condition!

And smokers, like me, remember to shampoo it too, yeah?

Love my beard. I’d never shave it off. Even got a cool skunk stripe on one side of my chinnychinchin.

I'm one of those folks who just looks profoundly wrong without a beard, so I've kept mine since I was old enough to grow a proper one.

5 years in Her Majesty's Armed Forces drilled the daily shave into me and its a habit that has lingered. Even so, I suspect even if I cared to, were I to grow a beard, it would be a poor and patchy affair and speckled with way too much grey these days.

On the flipside, as an anathema to you beardies, I have recently reverted back to the simple pleasures of a vintage double edge safety razor and proper lathered shaving soap just like grandpa used to use...

I have a goatee. I can't grow hair on the sides of my face for some reason. Even the goatee is a bit longer on top to cover up the patchiness. Fortunately I bought the $5 Dollar Shave Club kit 3 months ago and am still working through it, I shave so infrequently.

I always wanted a viking beard though, so consider me jealous.

Alas, I am cursed. I can't grow a full beard. All I get is a goatee+moustache like Johnny Depp, which just doesn't look right on me since I am unfortunately not a pirate captain. So I remain beardless.

It looks like a patchy mess when I grow out my facial hair so I'm clean shaven (usually stubble if I'm being honest as I'm lazy).

I just do whatever. I don't tend to keep beards for long though. I'm planning to grow one out for Movember but only because I've got a 70s themed party on the 1st Dec and I'm going to be able to instantly turn it into a handlebar and epic sideburns.

Then the whole lot goes again.

The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. I have a full goatee. I wish I could have a proper ZZ Top style beard, but my beard just get's too curly and unruly if it gets longer than an inch. Besides, I have to be able to wear a respirator sometimes for my job, so a big beard won't work.

I can only grow a bit of a goatee, being an Asian seems to generally predispose you to not having the ability to grow out a lustrous beard that others can. Not that I mind, I personally prefer keeping my hair short, both on top and the bottom of my head.

For many years I just plateaued at “scruffy” and never progressed to anything recognizable as a beard. So for most of my adult life I shaved on a semi-weekly basis due to laziness. Been shaving daily for the last two years since I re-entered the workforce.

But I decided to shake things up a bit. I’m going to see what I can do in a month, and am about 3 weeks in at this point. I figure I’ll give it a full month to grow, and then see what we have to work with for shaping. Right now the sides are a bit patchy, so anything sideburn or full is probably out. Looking like I might be able to pull of a decent Van Dyke.

But I’m trying not to count my chickens until they are hatched. The sideburns might pull a come from behind finish and I might go with a nice set of mutton chops!

I'm pretty hairy and have been since I was a teenager. Right now I have a fairly short beard. I'd like to grow it a little longer, but unfortunately i have grey hair on the sides of my beard, it grows faster than my regular hair, and it puffs out a lot more. As a result when I attempt to grow it out, instead of looking like a a dangerous viking I look like a fat hillbilly. So, it probably will remain a little less than an inch forever.

a beard which grows basically only on the "downward" facing part of the face/chin (as in, the underside of the jaw/jawline, not up on outward facing areas/cheeks).

Proper beard area is above the red line, below and you start venturing into neck beard. Some people have a beard that starts on the underside of the jaw line and runs down the neck which is like the mullet of beard fashion.

Same here. Although, when I got out for a 5 year break, I vowed to grow a full beard and 2 feet of hair on top. My hair got maybe a half inch in the back before I lost my mind. My beard didn't make it two weeks. Soon as the hairs curved around to start tickling/scratching my face, I was done.

Truth be told, if I could afford permanent hair removal of the beard and mustache area, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

You don't technically need any facial hair to be a neckbeard, but a katana seems like a requirement.

I've had a short beard for at least the last two years. I get a haircut every six weeks and will generally get a beard trim along with it, unless it needs maintenance prior to that (like if I need to look a little more respectable for something).

My wife hates it and does nothing but complain about it being "scratchy" on her face but I like it too much to so she has to deal with it.

I try to keep beard out of my face as seems I just can't grow beard that looks anything like decent! Guess my genes just aren't suitable for it. Generally all the males in my family are shaven so maybe there's reason for that...

I’m working against genetics myself. Lots of very bad hair in my family.

I've got a short beard, maybe 1" - 1.5" long.

I like my trimmed beard though.

More or less a short clipped beard, usually around 1" in length. Although I occasionally sport a Goatee and sideburns of the same length.
It does not take long for me to grow back the full beard (less than 2-3 weeks) so I like to alternate between that and the goatee.

But my face have been covered for nigh-on a decade, with only 1 exception over 2 years ago in which I wanted to show my wife and kids what my face looked like without. My wife all but demanded I glue it back on, lol. She said I looked just like my sister without facial fur.
I also sometimes shave down to just a mustache for Halloween to be Mario (see my Avatar) but haven't done that in years. Bearded Mario works too.

Seconded! Tightly-cropped hair & goatee. I suspect mine might grow out a bit more than yours, but I just don't like it bushier. I have a couple patchy spots that make beard growing not so good. I grow a stubble beard over vacations and holidays because I get lazy about shaving.

I'm 'twixt short beard and a few inches.

I apparently look better with a beard than without. I also happen to like beards and dislike shaving. Too much hair, though, so I have to shave the neck every couple of days.

Due to my job, I'm forced to keep it clean shaven. I'm not great at it, because I usually toe the line as how far I let it go.

I've still got rather decent sideburns, straight, thick and extending down just further than my earlobes.
My beard, when I let it grow out, is thinner than I'd like, but the coverage is okay - I'm still missing the hair needed to link up the mustache to the goatee, but with some tactical trimming, it can be a decent short clipped beard/goatee.
