What’s the best way for 2 friends to learn to play, we can’t get to a club, we can’t get to a store regular and don’t know anyone else that plays but see each other every other week. What’s the best way to escalate games to better learn to play?

Get a copy of the rules (there's a free download on the GW website) and play.

You could start with the boxed game set - soul wars - that contains a single copy of the big rule book (which has rules and lore and stuff) and two armies - Stormcast and Nighthaunt. It also has a host of other things as well to get you started.

If you don't like those two armies or can't decide who would get which then a copy of the rules from the free download and then pick up around 500 points of models to get you started in two armies you like. It is "easier" if you pick armies that have a Battle Tome on their store page. Armies without a Battletome can still be played, but will vary on where their rules are (some are covered in the Generals Handbook 2018) - so ask here if you're interested in those factions.

Otherwise escalation is the best approach - start at 500 points and learn the game, then expand to 1000, 1500 etc.... Note 500 points is pretty tight for AoS in general, so some armies might not work their best at that point level, but its more than enough to get your feet wet and get you playing.

As Overread said, the rules are free on the net. Also the profiles are free on GW site when you view the miniatures or the Age of Sigmar App. Only thing you need to pay on the AoS app is what is bought in the books. Heck the rules are on the App so I would strongly suggest getting the app.

As long as you don't care who wins or looses in the first few games and just to get your feet wet, you can play one of the ways without paying anything. No points are needed, just field what you have. This can be unbalanced though but you can change up the rules to any way you BOTH see fit. Of course you both have to agree to the rules adjustment though.

At least this way there is no worry about buying anything. If you already have minis then you are good to go. If you don't look what appeals to you look wise, and story wise. Some armies I would never consider but really like because of story wise.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

We have rules and models I’m thinking more what rules do we add as we escalate, endless spells, terrain, etc.

Well start simple and add what you want really as you gain experience.

It's probably easier to leave Realm Rules out of things for a bit, though really all they do is add more spells and artifacts to choose from to the game; whilst Endless Spells are not that hard to add, but you can likely leave them out for a bit and then bring them in later.

Terrain should always have rules, though magical terrain features you might, again, leave out till you're used to the basics.

Then just add what you want till its fun for you both.

What about path to glory campaigns? A good way to start to learn the game?

Path to Glory is a good way to start the game because you don't need a lot of models. It is actually my preferred way to play the game because moving individual models can be a pain when you have over 100 of them to move a turn.

There are some balance issues we've run into before, primarily with things like nurgle's summoning mechanic not scaling at all to sizes, and a couple of bonkers unit entries but overall I've had a positive experience with Path to Glory and would recommend it.
