I've never played it myself, but if you were curious about Destiny 2 and have battlenet, now you have Destiny 2 as well! Just go redeem the gift.

Despite the controversy surrounding the game, this offer does sound rather enticing.

I'm guessing that it's permanently free, and does not include any of the expansions.

It feels like an apology or bribe*. Blizzcon is apparently going badly for Blizz.

The last is really getting pushback, even in person at the Con. The Q&A session centered around 'is this an April Fool's joke? And isn't it in bad taste? And isn't this just a clone of a different mobile game by somebody else?'

The company seems intent on proving they have no ideas or plans, just recycling dead content.


*though in actuality, Blizz has no real say on the Destiny 2 thing. That's an EA Activision (yeah, I confuse the two companies sometimes) decision, and just a pure marketing move of 'here's the base game free, now buy DLC.'

Keep in mind, per the contract, there WILL be a Destiny 3 that will replace Destiny 2 (same as it replaced Destiny 1) and restart everyone all over again. So EA Activision doesn't lose much by getting non-Blizz fans onto the launcher and in a position to buy more.

Weirdly, this has kind of become the norm for Blizzard games, except for their sacred cow, WoW. Starcraft II became free a few years back, and last year I think they gave us the first expansion, Heart of the Swarm free as well. I got Diablo III as a freebie with one of the wow expansions, I think.

Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm were built free to play from the ground up.

They almost seem to be making a transition into a freemium studio.

The only thing that costs money in SCII now is the story campaigns. The base game with the ability to play the heroes mode and multiplayer is free now. This has become pretty typical of long running online games since Guild Wars pioneered the model.
