so I treated myself to a copy of this recently -- done LOADS of overtime ! .

It's great, beautifully presented and well written.

A genuine delight.

If you ever played D & D or AD & D, bought Dragon or Dungeon magazine then I can recommend this book for you.

Have to say that seeing things like this

is something I never really thought I'd see in my lifetime.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

What's it like/got inside it?
Are there terrible crimes of printing going on (The dreaded double-page spread which has NEVER EVER made sense to anyone who wants to keep a book a book without cracking the spine in half)

..err.. some I guess, but looked good to me.

If you go through the amazon link , top left side you get a pretty good preview of some of the book.

Went to some real efforts in writing this.

Yeah, I love this book as well. As someone relatively new to the game, having its entire storied history in one place to peruse is great, and the fact it's jammed with so many pieces of art and photos and all that extra ephemera is just excellent. Definitely a recommendation from me as well.

There are a few double-page spreads sadly, including the amazing Tiamat from the Tyranny of Dragons cover. But most of the art is single page or inset, so it's only an issue on a few pieces. Overall the layout is very well done, there's an effort make to avoid having text over most of the images and everything is photographed/reproduced/printed very crisply. I daresay for some of the older pieces, the only time they'll have looked better is the original art.

All I will say is to be careful if you're ordering it from Amazon UK. Their price is decent, but I ended up with 3 copies and a full refund as each time the front and back cover were scratched to hell, the gold lettering torn and the corners bashed due to dreadful packaging (two loose in a box twice the size, one jammed in so tight the inside of the box scratched up the covers). So yeah, I got the book for free in the end, but I'd much rather have had a copy that arrived intact the first time...

My buddy picked up a copy and it is indeed a lot of fun to browse.

I have a sneaky suspicion my wife might have ordered this for me for my birthday - she paid more attention than usual to me blabbing about it at dinnertime the other day.

I love the art in Dungeons and Dragons books so I will definitely enjoy it if that is the case! I also have Peterson's other book, Playing at the World, which is a very interesting read.

I did indeed get this from my wife, and it is awesome. I really love browsing through it and finding out more about the decisions made at each point in the games history. Still think 3e or Planescape had the best art overall.
