“Crazy Rich Asians” star Michelle Yeoh is in talks to reprise her “Star Trek Discovery” role of Phillippa Georgiou to lead an upcoming spin-off series based around her character in the works at CBS All Access.

Still in the early planning stages, the spin-off will likely to focus on a continuation of her adventures in the upcoming second season of the series where she’s now working for Section 31 – the secret, autonomous organization that is a part of the Federation charter..

Sounds good to me - only thing better would be a full Mirror Universe series.

Ah, I was hoping this would be a prequel series following her and the Shenzhou before Burnham came along. For one so short-lived in the role she was up there with the best of the Captains. Less of a fan of the Space Pirate Empress Secret Agent version, but she still does a good job in the role.

Interesting.

I know some will complain that it's just another treasured property being rung for all it's worth. But I don't entirely agree.

Tellybods are ultimately risk averse. They want to do new shows, of course they do. But if someone's pitch can be tied into existing, popular shows? Why not? We get a (hopefully) tasty new slice of Star Trek, and everyone goes home more or less happy.

All I ask is that they vary it up. TNG worked because it revived the original format with bells and whistles. DS9 stood on it's own two feet because it was a different take. Voyager and Enterprise didn't work for me, because they were just sort of doing what TNG did better.

Discovery I liked better. I enjoyed the core cast's performances. It was particularly enjoyable not to have everyone all stuffy. When Tilly blurts out gasp a swear, it's actually an appropriate swear. It works within the context of the scene and the characters.

This one? If it is following Section 31? That's another New, and one I'm all for. We've see the shiny-super-goodie-little-two-shoes Federation all the time. Even when they make moral compromises. But Section 31? What little we learned of them in DS9 (it's definitely my favourite!) left I for one wanting to know more.

The Picard series has also raised my excitement. Back to presumably the Prime, a chance to see The Federation and indeed Alpha Quadrant following the Dominion War. Did the Klingon, Federation and Romulan alliance lead to better relations overall? Or did they simply prove to be allies of convenience and necessity all along? How did it shift the power balance? I don't need it to be explicit, but I do want to be able to spot it's influences (especially given the Defiant Class....)

We'll find out soon enough eh.

What do you mean, "back to Prime" MDG? They've double-rainbow-super-duper-pinkie-sworn that Discovery is already Prime

Shock horror - I take pretty much completely the opposite view on this. Risk-averse executives using existing IPs to piggyback their own (typically awful) ideas upon is a cancerous process that dilutes existing worlds for little real gain, and the few concepts that don't end up being rubbish are inevitably good enough to have stood on their own anyway. Section 31 as a basic concept is antithetical to Trek and completely undermines the Federation's moral authority, but it's hardly a surprise to see the concept dredged up as part of a version of Trek that has more in common with Section 31 than Starfleet, as-was, and under the guiding grimderp-loving hand of Alex "franchise killer" Kurtzman.

I will never understand why folk who want novelty can't just look for something new rather than hoping something changes to suit them. I like Star Trek, The Culture, Star Wars, nuBSG(pre religious whackaloonery), Revelation Space, Dune, 40K, and loads of other sci-fi IPs, but I like them for what they are and if I ever feel tired of one of them I just go and read/watch something else. The great benefit of that approach being that if and when I decide I want one of those things again, they're still there - or they used to be, these days it's a toss up whether they've been coopted by some hack executives to push a streaming service or half-arsed backdoor pilot or audience-chasing reboot and transformed into something unrecognisable in theme, tone, and/or aesthetic.

I would rather watch the Warp 10 lizard-fething episode of Voyager than this edgelordy nonsense where the Federation ends up being basically just the Mirror Empire with better PR.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Religious whackaloonery was ALWAYS part of BSG, though.
In oBSG, it was mormon-based religious whackaloonery. In nuBSG, it was more polytheism (humans) v monotheism (cylons with their "one true bot" ) whackaloonery.

Didn’t they meet Satan in the original BSG?

No, they met Iblis.
Iblis is not Shaitan. Iblis was a Djinn, and NOT the "big bad" of that particular mythic-cycle.

(So there's islamic whackaloonery in bsg as well ... but the kobol lords and lost 13th tribe and a few other references were all pulled from mormon whackaloonery, as Glen Larson was a mormon)

Technicalities matter to the religious whackaloonies, after all.

but he was played by an English bloke, which is generally American TV / movie shorthand for dastardly ne'er do wells

and still made more sense than nu-BSG's recycled DS9 claptrap

I just saw this really good thought on this forum

Probably the worst example of this is at the start of the Horus Heresy itself where Abnetts writes Horus as this fantastic, sensitive character. Who then radically switches emotional gears under McNeil for no damn reason that makes it impossible to stay immersed or care about any characters at all when they never emotionally act in the same manner.

This means a lot to me because I think of different spinoffs of tv series, or different installments of the heresy series, as totally distinct from each other.

I think that the primary artistic function of Star Trek as a whole is to give Avery Brooks a vehicle to do what he did. It’s the best depiction of black fatherhood on television ever. In Bashir and O’brien it also has what the producers convincingly describe as the only genuine friendship in all or Star Trek.

Is Michelle Yeoh in section 31 going to be Dan Abnett or Graham McNeill, is it going to be Empire Strikes Back or the Ewok Christmas Special?

The one thing I can say is that it will have a real hard time having any effect on Star Trek continuity at all. As far as I’m concerned, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames aren’t canonical, those books have absolutely no authority about what happens to Loken, Keeler, and Aximand. I’ve never felt any interest I reading them at all. Enterprise has no way to effect DS9, or TNG and TOS for that matter. Enterprise is a separate thing and so are TOS and TNG.

OTOH the trill in TNG and the Trill in DS9 are both totally in continuity with each other. Maybe the disco spin off will be too.
