This recently came up in a game that I was judging and I was hoping for some input. In a game, Mortarion charged and killed an Imperial Knight Valiant in close combat. The Knight's controller wanted to use the Valiant Last Stand stratagem, and used it to fire all of his shots into Mortarion. The Death Guard player argued that because the stratagem is specifically used "before removing the model," Mortarion would still count as being engaged in close combat (within 1" of an enemy model) and could thus not be shot at, and the Knight, also being within 1" of an enemy model, could not shoot to begin with. As the Valiant Last Stand stratagem does not explicitly state that it allows the model to shoot even if within 1" of an enemy model, nor does the Knight itself, I ruled with the Death Guard player, and as such the Knight could only make close combat attacks rather than shooting attacks.
What do you guys think? Is there an FAQ or errata that I have missed that would clear this up, or is it really just as simple as has been laid out? Thanks.
