So, it's pretty much a given that this will be coming soon. We have some sort of 40K Chaos bit (Oblit?) that has appeared in the rumor mill this week, and we have new CSM sculpts in Blackstone, that are specifically called out as Black Legion.

Rumors about a new Abbadon, Oblits and the like have been going on for months now.

Is anyone aware of any other CSM like objects that have shown up this past year in the Rumor Mill photos that GW releases?

Personally, I'm really hoping the codex is viable. I've wanted a CSM force for ages and this looks like my chance to get in on the ground floor!

Pretty much a given?

Dude...where on earth are you getting that info?

Black legion is not a given, its a given that its NOT coming.

Black legion is the "basic" CSM. a BL codex would be like making an ultramarine codex.

New chaos models? almost sure. abbadon+oblits is likely, maybe even something actually new.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

While there will likely be an Abaddon model coming out within the next year, I expect there will be no Black Legion Codex.

What I've been told is that Blackstone Fortress is as close as we will get to a replacement for the 6th edition Black Legion supplement. Having seen the contents of that box, it feels like a cruel joke.

Honestly, Black Legion are fine as-is playing the CSM Codex. While I'd love to see the return of Bringers of Despair / Cyclopean Cabal / Chosen as troops, I think I'm fine with things the way they are.

Well, I mean, WE and EC need lots of love, so it is almost a given that GW will ignore them and do something else.

Probably not BL, though. They haven't released anything Khorne related for about five minutes, so my money would be there.

New Oblits, New Abbadon, new vanilla CSM marines that just happen to carry the name "black legionaries."

Yeah, they're coming. I'll gladly eat some crow if they somehow don't, but the lore for this has been building for over two years, you'd have to be blind not to see what they're planning to do.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ultras get a book as well. But, as I said, let's assume the book is in the pipe, what could they do with a truly Chaos Undivided book?

If you keep up with the 8th edition lore, that's likely also to happen soon. Especially with Wrath and Rapture hitting this christmas.

With the exception of the single CSM and CL that came with Blackstone Fortress, none of those things have been released. You are speculating off the speculation of others.

I'm not at all saying that I'm not speculating. I'm choosing to use what I've seen of the company over the past three years, and extrapolate that since they've basically spent the last year and a half of that two year period giving the player base what it wants, sometimes without any question at all, that this is very likely to happen. It seems interesting that right around the time online discussion ramps up about new Obliterators, we get a picture from GW that clearly is a chaos heavy weapon mounted to some kind of grotesque arm. We get new CSM basic marine sculpts, upscaled to match 1K sons, deathguard and Primaris. Then there is talk about a new Abbadon coming soon, along side things that we know are happening (Wrath and Rapture) and the fact that Blackstone fortresses are sort of the Black Legions thing. Renegades are coming in guard form.

All of this is enough to make me hold off on purchases until after the new year for new armies, because these are things that a lot of people, myself included really want!

Mark my words for better or for worse, whatever happens, I am willing to bet that there will be the following codexes within the next 18-24 months.

Black Legion (With abby) ---> Likely
Emperors Children (Likely with Primarch) ---> Very Likely
World Eaters (Likely with Primarch) ---> Very Likely
Ultramarines ---> Possible, but not my highest prediction.
Chaos Renegades ---> Very Likely
Rouge Traders ---> Likely
The Lost and the Damned. ---> Possible

I'm hoping so, right or wrong, the more important thing will be to see if any of these factions get this kind of attention in the next year or two.

In fact, I wouldn't at all be surprised if BL and renegades are in the Vigilus box.

I would be very surprised and disappointed if GW releases a BL Codex when WE and/or EC are in more need of one.
As stated above, a BL Codex is equivalent to an Ultramarine Codex. Both are the "vanilla" of their factions and their "Vanilla" Codices are already out.

Now given that almost all Codices are released, I could see 2019 see the release of supplements, of which 7E did indeed have a Black Legion supplement

I'm pretty confident you'll be seeing both of those, likely one of which if not both will have a primarch model in it, soon.

Crow is tasty.

Suspect we'll get World Eaters and Emperor's Children way before Black Legion, given that they are the template for generic CSM and therefore quite handily covered by the existing codex.

Lastly, it would be an utterly redundant effort. It would provide no new units, it would require no new models, it would be an utter waste of time. Also, Obliterators canonically have been more closely tied to Iron Warriors than to Black Legion really.

World Eaters alone provides at least:
Angron
New Chaos Lord Juggernaut.
Berzerker Terminators.

Emperor's Children provides:
Fulgrim
Sonic Helbrute
Chaos Lord on Steed
Sonic Tanks (various...)
Sonic Terminators
Honestly the list for EC goes on and on, it's kind of absurd how many kits/models they could foist on the community with that codex.

Black Legion is a re-sculpt of Abaddon, basic CSM models that nobody is clamoring for and Obliterators?

Maybe you're right, but from a business standpoint seems pretty unambitious and certainly not enough to warrant printing an entire new codex.

See here is the thing. Everyone keeps decrying vanilla, but I think GW is trying to not have vanilla books anymore. You can't do a lot of detailed copyrighting of vanilla books. I wouldn't at all be surprised if all of the surviving factions have their own books by 9th editions, with all vanilla codexes gone forever from the game.

Also, And please do not take this as disrespectful, but I like how you list lots of things for WE and EC, and then list only three things for BL, ignoring the possibility of such a book for that faction having access to many new models none of us can even name, because we weren't the ones to dream them up. BL is the most prestigious and important of the Chaos factions, the ruin bringers of Cadia, the sons of the Warmaster, the man who slayed the emperor. It's almost like a lot of people in the thread are beyond discussing this, and are dancing around the idea that they don't even want this to be a thing.

Just to be clear on the discussion, let's assume it's happening. Has there been any other Wednesday GW teasers that look chaosy, that we haven't yet seen a model for, and if there are, is it possible any of them could be either A) Chapter non-specific, or B) Black Legion Specific?

I didn't disparage vanilla, I just said it's already been covered so why bother with it again? Because of the fluff? Doesn't seem to be a big money maker. You mention the prestige of BL, but prestige doesn't sell new models. New units sell new models, new sculpts have a very limited effect on sales. GW is in the business of selling models, not good feelings. Is there some amazing new BL unit that I'm missing?

They're currently in the middle of a Khorne and Slaanesh daemons push. GW has stated that Slaanesh is getting some love soon. EC/WE clearly has the greatest potential for new models, especially given that those are units that existed in previous editions. Is BL missing some significant line of units from previous editions that have failed to become new models?

Also, the CSM codex is the Black Legion codex, has been for many editions. But who knows, maybe they see massive potential in re-packaging mediocre CSM resculpts from Blackstone Fortress that nobody is asking for, I'll be passing on them. I mean, it's two CSM models with Bolters, it really doesn't get more generic than that.

Hasn't stopped GW from making Black Legion supplement before though ;-) More books to sell isn't bad proposition for GW.

I think I see what you're saying, and the misunderstanding is on my part.

You're saying that Codex Heretic Astartes = Black Legion

My argument is that it isn't. It's codex heretic astartes, that includes rules for Black Legion, among 5 other chapters. Just like the Adeptus Astartes codex.

My second argument would be to say that yes, I agree with you about both WE and EC. However, you ask the question is BL missing something that it needs. I would counter to this with, is BL even really an army? It might not be missing anything, because it doesn't really have anything to begin with in the current book. Thus, a brand new book, focused entirely on that chapter would need to be created, which now opens up unlimited potential for the design team and the art teams to create new models for the CSM line. It is going to happen? Nothing is 100% as I've said. But I think, that it will soonish. It might be after WE or EC or both, but it could also happen before. It's hard to predict.

Personally I would also say you've seen two of the seven sculpts from the Blackstone CSM kit. We were explicitly told at the event they were unveiled in that there were 7 more sculpts not included in Blackstone. Of the two that we saw, I loved them! I cannot wait to see what all options come in the full kit later on down the line. I'm also extremly excited about the new hammer lord, in my opinion he's one of the best looking models in that box alongside the renegade guard and the two CSM legionaries.

By that logic there's no codex Ultramarines and it should be coming down the pipe shortly? You know what, sure, embrace the reality of your choice. It doesn't make any sense from a business standpoint, but sure, roll with that.

I think the most we will likely get is a 8.5 codex in the next couple of years. No real reason to run just Black Legion, I have a feeling that EC and WE will get their own books, and maybe after that we will get an updated CSM book without the cult legions in them.

I would welcome plastic obliterators and a revised csm kit with the aesthetic of the bsf models. The new look is definitely superior to the squat looking current csm kit. A generic csm codex with renegade guard rolled in with them would be a dream. I hope it happens but until I see some physical evidence i'm hesitant to believe anything.

Yea it's been years since we got a new IA book. Those new retro land speeders though are super tempting.

Not really.

I mean, there is a book and it says 'Renegades and Heretics' in it a few times and there some other words that purport to be *checks notes* 'rules', but to say it's a codex is severely over-egging the pudding.

I hope they aren't rolled into CSM.

My bois will be sad, because that probably means we won't get all the options of the full list.

I'd like a codex for them from GW, or an IA from FW, either, because their current rules hurt me.

And even for index level, it's a pretty gak list.

Given that Ultramarines are a single entry on the GW site, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Its on index level. I SAID its on index level.

Does not make it any less of an army, just one that is yet not properly implemented.

No, I just deleted half of it so that you'd immediately know that my 'not really' was in reference to the first half, not the second.

My comment was mostly meant to be light-hearted.

R&H are unplayable as a mono-Faction, FWIW. Even in the fluffy games I play.

All 'crimes' should be treasured if they bring you pleasure somehow.
