Can units deploy embarked in transport witch are not dedicated to them?

Transports tell you what Keywords units need to embark on them.

Transports are not dedicated to a single squad like they were in prior editions. Any unit with compatible Keywords can embark.

Yes. "Dedicated Transports" is a misnomer in 8th, since any unit (that can go inside them as per the transports rules) can use them or start deployed in them. Any unit that has a transport capacity can have any number of units (up to its capacity) deploy inside them whenever the transport is deployed. For example when you deploy a Rhino, you can deploy two 5-man Tactical Squads in it if you want. Or when you deploy a Land Raider you can deploy a 7 Man Tactical Squad and 3 Captains if you so wish.

Huh... I always took the phrase 'Dedicated Transport' to mean it was dedicated to being a transport as a primary function. Not that it was dedicated to a particular unit.

Ah, I never thought of it that way. In previous editions "Dedicated" Transports were locked to the unit that purchased them, while normal Transports purchased as a FoC slot could be used as taxis.

Right yeah, that also makes sense! I was out of the game for a long time and while I dabbled in 7th I wasn't fully back until 8e.

One thing to recall is that when a vehicle is destroyed, you roll a dice for each model inside and on a 1, remove a model, as opposed to roll a dice for each model and on a 1 remove that model.

As such, if you have a small, vital/expensive unit, if you can fit some weaklings in with them it will aid them in surviving - 10 models, roll 10 dice, roll 2 1's, remove 2 chaff models.

Example: 5 meganobs and 10 grots in a battlewagon. wagon (inevitably) gets blown up, roll 15 D6, roll 3 1's remove 3 grots. as opposed to rolling 5 D6, roll a 1, remove a meganob!

in other words, if your warlord is alone in a vehicle, he has a 1/6 chance of outright dying if the vehicle explodes (even ghazzie!), whereas if he has a unit with him, you can remove the whole unit before the warlord.

So when you deploy a transport, and put 2 5 man squads in it.. is that 3 deployments or just 1?

That is 1 deployment drop.

When 8e first released you automatically went first if you finished deploying first, so sticking everything in transports was a valid tactic to lower your drop count!

Now it gives you +1 on the role you don't see that as much. It's still nice to get the +1, but it's not worth massively changing your list to ensure it!
