I recently qualified earlier in the year and the partner of the firm has broached the question of where I see myself and seems keen to find some way of increasing my charge out rate.

The problem is that the firm is quite small and my assumption has always been that the natural place to go is to step into a supervisory role over junior staff; eventually entering some kind of managerial role. However the firm is too light on staff for that. The boss suggested either sending new clients my way (not sure how this differs from what I do), finding some kind of specialisation I was interested in pursuing and the one which he suggested was the tax investigations; which I do not want to touch with a barge pole TBH.

Basically Iam a little unsure what to suggest. What kind of specialisms would be reasonable for a medium sized accountancy firm with a few offices to focus on? Frankly I’ve been far too busy to ask these questions.

Should I seriously consider moving on if there is a lack of more senior roles?

My personality is to be direct with people. So if you are interested in pursuing a managerial role, I would ask your boss what he (sexist assumption?) thinks of that.

Your boss has likely suggested tax investigations as that’s something he thinks there’s a market for. If you make more money with that specialization, that would be a win-win. If you become good at it, and gain a reputation for it, you’ll get more work in that specialized niche and may be able to develop your own branch that you could manage.

I know sweet feth nothing about accounting, but building your own position is pretty sweet.

Well, tax investigations is more like the complaints department. Not a healthy place to be.

First, I would suggest trying the ACA for advice. No idea what they give as I don’t work in practice. I work in company finance, so work with lots of ACCA and CIMA. They have careers advisors and forums. That’s what your paying hundreds of pounds a year for.

Second, on the management front, think hard about it. Everyone assumes that you go in to management, but do you want to deal with that? I’m a manager because I enjoy managing. I have a few people working for me who are very very good at their jobs but are technical people. When you become a manager it’s not just about being paid more and being more senior, it’s about supporting, guiding and helping those people and getting he best from them. About 50% of my job is management. If you don’t want to be the “complaints department” think hard about having people reporting to you.

Absolutely agree with you man. Managing it's not only about a higher salary. It's more about supporting people who work for you and with you.

Be warned, Management is no longer about what you personally accomplish. It is about what you can help others accomplish. It is surprisingly difficult to wrap your head around the difference and often is why new "managers" fail.

Secondly, you must realize that there is a world of difference between managing and leading. Learn the difference and know when to apply which.
