On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

In what was probably one of the biggest book to movie miscastings of recent times, along with Tom Hanks casting himself as Robert Langford (the Da Vinci Code) and Nicole Kidman as Ms. Coulter (The Golden Compass), finally news that Tom Cruise is to be replaced in his role as Jack Reacher.

Have to say this was high on my list of 1st-world problems to get annoyed about!

Story from the Beeb
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-46207601

Interesting question is that Lee Child is actually asking fans who they would like to see cast in the role, for a forthcoming TV/streaming adaptations.

Does anyone have any thoughts who might be good for the role, and fill Jack Reachers size 12 boots?

I think Vincent D'Onofrio might be a good call, and whilst he's not quite the man mountain Reacher is meant to be his presence should cover it

I enjoyed the Jack Reacher films for what they were.

I approve of the choice to replace him by the powers-at-be, as long as they're comfortable with a likely drop in view/profit, etc. Tom Cruise is a brand in and of himself.

I thought the films were OK but I think the book series will naturally lend itself to a TV series more easily.

Don't know who would take the lead - I kind of think they should go for a unknown newbie - that way they can come fresh to the role without bringing any typecasting baggage with them.

besides the MI films I've not really like much of his rrcent output, I'm blaming Katie, prior to her he was settling into middle aged (Collateral) dad roles (War of the Worlds)

then younger wifey rocks up and its back to pumpy arm running action hijinx

I wouldn't blame katie so much as scientology. Cruise has clearly lost his mind since joining.

Maybe, but he's been part of the L.Ron cult since wife 1 lured him in so the general background wakadoodlness just blended into his persona, suddenly thinking he's 15 years younger is all on Holmes (or the smoke and mirrors panto he's the red blooded lovely lady pleaser...)

Is it bad that I've never hard/recall hearing of these films? Guess I'd best add them to the watch list!

As for books to TV or film, most books are many hours long in reading and pacing wise do best with a series. Films in the past had bigger budgets and could do things most TV shows could only dream of, today that barrier is far removed and many TV shows are very capably produced with effects and sets to rival films.

As for sciencetology I'm still shocked that they are allowed to operate and haven't been shut down. Then again part of me wishes I could write a failed sci-fi novel and turn it into a multimillion religion with my own fevered group of worshippers and devout fanatics!

Yep - but then I also liked the Dracula flm in the series. I though the Mummy was a fun film, he was playing a bit against type and it rattled along nicely. Also enjoying the Mission Impossible films much more than the current crop of Bond fllms

I feel like Tom Cruise has hit this odd funk where no matter how good the movies he's in are, his name simply doesn't inspire interest like it used to. I think a good part of that is his image as a very public member of Scientology, even though he seems to have distanced himself over the past few years from that.

Edge of Tomorrow was excellent. Though I credit Blount with that one

First Jack Reach was good the second meh.

Oblivion was actually pretty dang solid. Didn't expect it when I watched but quite enjoyed it.

Edge was okay, so long as you dont overthink the timey-wimey (also the beach was a weird studio recreation of a local beach)

Likewise Oblivion was passable but very much felt like a Hollywood redo of the superior Moon

It has certainly hurt his image but not his acting.

Right on - totally agree.

If you don't mind me asking - why didn't you expect to like Oblivion? Post Apocalyptic - Morgan Freeman / Tom Cruise / Giant budget. I'm surprised it's doesn't get a lot more praise. Really blame cruise for that. Cruise does well with regular people but not Hollywood critics it seems.

Gah. I hate the series. The movie managed to keep itself simple even with a conspiracy plotline, but the TV series just took that tight narrative and made everything a conspiracy cliché. About the only part I liked was how he beat the bad guy towards the end with a very clever slight of hand. Everything else completely took me out of it XD

Naw the mummy was gak. Tonally all over the place. It toned things down and tried to have fun action beats like the brendan fraiser mummys but never actually tried to be a comedy. The lady mummy would have been an excellent horror movie monster if at any point the movie tried to be horror. It half assed its way in several directions and did crap in all of them.

Dracula untold was fun though. Even though it was really stupid.

Well, i didn't really think we needed it since the original movie was decent too, soi your criticism was valid. However, I enjoyed it for what it was.... Pulp action on screen.

AS for Jack reacher (Also just Pulp Action) they should cast Idris Elba......... <scurries into hiding until the smoke clears>

He would have made a much better casting than Tom Cruise.

Carries that on-screen presence of being able to out-think you and kick your ass physically.

So that's Jack Reacher!

How old is supposed to be the character in the books? Idris elba is 46 and Tom Cruise was 50 at the time of the first movie. Aren't they too old for the part?

I'd like a younger actor, someone who is 35ish. Like Joseph Gordon Levitt, Jake Gyllenhaal or Ryan Gosling.

Also Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy or Sam Worthington could work but I'd prefer a younger actor and all those ones are already too famous for portraying a character in some action movies.

None of these actors come even close to the physical scale of Jack Reacher. Maybe Tom Hardy comes closes but I don't think he suits it as an actor.

Again, you'd need the actor to 'act being 6'4" and physical', which is back to Tom Cruise problems.
