Hey Dakka team, I’m moving to Charlotte, NC at the beginning of next year, and I am looking for a gaming group. I have always wanted to start wargaming (specifically 40k and AoS) but have never pulled the trigger. Money, time, ect always getting in the way it seemed. I really want to start my first army, and I would love to join a local group who wouldn’t mind a complete newbie to drink some beers and throw some dice. Weekday evenings are probably best, I’ve got 2 small kids (16 months and 1 week) so usually I save my weekends for family time.

I also am interested in DND 5e, board games, and used to play MTG a long time ago.

There's the GW in Charlotte, and there's Mighty Meeple which is really a nice place.

If you can get out to Newton, we have X-Wing and Board Game nights. But I'm the only 40Ker. (And I'm way out of practice)

My beloved 40K armies:
Children of Stirba
Order of Saint Pan Thera

I noticed the GW store when I did a quick Google, honestly felt a little intimidated jumping right into playing at a FLGS without any practice games under my belt. Everyone starts somewhere I guess though right?

Newton seems a bit far (about an hour I think) it would be a hike to get out there. Probably not something I could keep up consistently though. If I’m in the area I will absolutely hit you up though. We could probably both use the practice.

Yeah most places outside of the city limits is going to be a 45- an hour drive but a lot of the stores are worth it. Another one I can recommend is Parker Banner Kent and Wayne.

Hey Chessonator, welcome to Charlotte! I’m a dad too getting back into 40K after being out for over 20 years...so a newbie like you. The local GW shop is very welcoming and when you get to Charlotte, hit me up! We can play some games and learn the 8th editition rules together, I even have 2 armies so you play with one of those

That’s great! I recently just bought the 8th rulebook to skim through and study a bit before I actually started. It would be awesome to try some armies out before I bought anything, however I am already very partial to both Ad Mech and Dark Angels purely based on lore and looks alone. I’ll be moving into my new house mid January and checking out local gaming shops soon after that so I will make sure to hit you up.

Then you are in luck, my 2 armies are Death Guard and Dark Angels

Well that works out well. I find myself geared more towards the shooting style armies. Not because they are shooty, for some reason I have just always liked their looks and style.

Reviving this thread just to let anyone who might be interested know that I’m planning on hitting up the Charlotte store tonight for some pick up games. I’ve only got about 1,000 points in various stages of painting process, but I can’t wait any longer to start rolling dice.

I am in the Charlotte area building out two Kill Teams. Not looking to get back into big40k proper but I am also looking for a gaming group, which I have honestly never had... always just played with a friend or two and my brother. I like a lot of board games and indi skirmish stuff too, big interest in Rogue Planet especially after reading the Rogue Planet 40k Berman blog. Also getting into frostgrave and want to try out Realitys Edge when it debuts next month too. Would love to meet up with some guys around here.

Im local to Charlotte as well. I am into 40K as well as older editions of WFB if anyone is interested in dusting off the old army books and getting a game in. Personally I am a fan of the 6th edition in WFB. Not sure when I will be available to get a game in, but I am sure that I can schedule something in the new year.

Depending on where you are, there is the Mighty Meeple which is far larger/playable than the small GW store. The GW store is okay, but quite tiny (the manager there is pretty cool according to my buddy). There is also a store called PBKW (Parker Banner Kent & Wayne), but that's in...Huntersville? I don't remember.

Matthews had a store called Your Friendly Local Gaming Store but I haven't been there since 2015. I'd assume it may still be there. It was a nice store with plenty of gaming tables, though was often busy. A new store just opened up somewhere else, but I can't recall where, my buddy was telling me about it - said it was around as large as the Meeple.

As usual with Charlotte traffic sucks everywhere.

My vote would be the Mighty Meeple (mainly because there is a Freddy's across the parking lot...and I love me some Freddy's!)

I can confirm the information on Mighty Meeple and PBKW.(PBKW is actually in Cornelius) PBKW is a larger store as far as game area of the two, and I think about the same as far as merchandise. GW Store in the University area is small, and I know the manager from way back, so we have been acquaintances for a while. Understanding that he is a fan boy of GW,( which makes sense that he has become a store manager) I have always liked him. I have not been to the one in Matthews or the one in Pineville yet. Perhaps I will make a trip there in the new year.

Is this the new one that opened this year?

No, CTT has been in business for a while, they have expanded with more room for more tables, not as big as Mighty Meeple though. the new store that opened this past summer was the Warhammer Store in Fort Mill. It's about the same size as the Games Workshop Store in the University area.

So a new development for me, I have moved in town from the north side to the south side of town due to work moving out of the center of town. I am now a few miles away from CTT these days.

Your Local Game Store is still around and moved to Mint Hill. CTTG is great because they have beer on tap and a slightly less smelly group.

CTTG has Beer on tap? Well that settles it for me then. I took quick trip in to try to find some Liquid Green Stuff, which no one really had around town. It was a nice store in my estimation, and the less smelliness is a good thing too.
